I'm not a fan of stories but I'm not big on snapchat either so I'm not exactly the target demographic.

It's pretty frustrating how the window of "attention" seems to be getting smaller and smaller.

A photo could "live" on flickr for a decent amount of time. Instagram you get activity for a few hours to a day but the posts are still *there* after that and now snapchat/stories you've got a hard cap.

but I guess it's easy to forget that instagram is fundamentally a platform for latte art and kittens and putting good photography on it is essentially a fringe use.

I just hate seeing anything go to waste.
I've always felt that the original intention of instagram was to create this sort of ephemeral "this is what I did today/last night" posts but the format was more generic and people ended up using it in many different ways. Originally you could only upload pics that you had taken within the app and I've always said that instagram should add a feature to make posts delete themselves after a certain amount of time. It also really separated itself by not allowing external links within posts or allowing third party apps to post which were really good decisions imo. It forces you to create content exclusively for the instagram and not just link to another source.

I personally think that's what made instagram so successful as a platform; people could use it however they want (ie a personal blog, a re-post tumblr-esq themed 'aesthetic' blog, a 'features' account to re-post other work you enjoy, a 'visual sketchbook', a portfolio, an advertising platform, behind-the-scenes, etc)

Then snapchat stories came along and did OG instagram better than instagram by making every post delete itself after 24 hours.

(i wish my posts deleted themselves after 24 hours)

Exactly right. Which I think makes it especially frustrating when instagram has now become *the* place for photography because its both amazing and terrible as a way of sharing photography.

the commodification of it is especially interesting and how contrived some posts are in the attempt to create that ephemeral feeling. I know people that bank a bunch of shots at once and change outfits just so they can a week off 'gram but still have posts every day.

A dog food company started following me on Instagram a few days ago. I was a little flattered because they are an expensive and follow like six thousand people. I hope they don't find out I used to buy their food but stopped because my dog likes this other stuff that's half the price better.

You can get a tour from Kyiv to Chernobyl via a bunch of different tourist agencies. It's only possible to go with an official guide though. If you with a tour agency, the cost varies with the size of the party. Expect to pay about $50-$100 depending. I was invited to go with a video unit from the Ministry of Culture, but they wouldn't give a foreigner a permit to go to the areas that the video unit was going to get access to.

My account is formerly a personal (and for years private) account for when I didn't think IG had any point (it still doesn't hurr), and I've just started converting it into something I can try to use as a self promotional tool (trying to get into portrait / fashion / model photography) though the seasons changed and it'll be slow going until spring. Actually, the hardest part is finding models, I've tried MM but it's not working. Guess I'll have to post classified ads to get test subjects :(

As the other dude said, there are loads of agencies that do them - a few friends and I spent a weekend in Kiev, the main reason for which was to go on the Chernobyl tour. They do 1, 2, 3 day tours. I'd say the 1 day tour is probably enough. Ours wasn't that expensive, and the guide was great at getting us ahead of the other tour groups so we got to be first to some of the iconic places like the ferris wheel and see them truly empty.

And yeah on the HDR, my page is a lot more varied now...

But you made it, right?! That's more important than having skill :D At least that's how Instagram "photographers" work. Which still confuses the crap out of me - there are so many horrible photographers on Instagram with 50k+ followers - how does that even happen?

On a more serious note, which one is yours? e: nevermind in the OP most of the stuff on there was pretty great! Your account is awesome.

Quality over quantity in my opinion. There are plenty of dumb apps you can get that will help bolster your follower count, but if people don't care about what you are doing, I don't see the point. Typically I just post what I want to post, and follow people that I think make good or interesting work. It feels more organic that way, and when someone you respect likes or comments on a photo, it means a lot more than when some random does. Groups/magazines like humbleartsfoundation, flakphoto, aintbadmagazine, hamburgereyes, strantmagazine, thisaintartschool, and theheavycollective are all constantly showing fascinating work. Follow them, follow those they feature (if you enjoy what they do) rinse and repeat. It's gotten to the point where scrolling through Instagram is more of an inspiration machine than it is just to see what people like to eat. Not that there is anything wrong with treating it like a social media account, it is, but at the end of the day, it's also a ridiculously powerful tool for photographers who want to get their work seen especially amongst the art community. At least if you care about that sort of thing.

Instagram for some people is a kind of pissing contest where they need to acquire as many followers as possible while following as few people as they can get away with.

I don't care. I follow friends, goons, and people who post photos that inspire me. I don't follow accounts full of image macros and selfies.
