rio posted:Does Instagram have a word limit anymore? I remember trying to cover every tag possible but often it would iust post with no words, assuming I went over a limit. I started using focalmark for that reason since it stayed under the limit. It was actually not bad at finding an audience when it first came out but I assume now so many people are using it that it doesn’t help much anymore and probably contributes to the issue of getting subs and them having them disappear. You are limited to 30 hashtags per upload and I believe your upload gets pretty quickly hidden from other users if you use too many hashtags. Most of the successful Instagrammers I know just have a poo poo ton of friends irl who will like and comment on everything they post. Also, if a goon follows a fellow goon it'd be good to post a comment to let us know so we don't ignore you thinking you'll just unfollow the next day.

InternetJunky posted:This is objectively false. Several of my photos have received the "sparkle award for excellence in painting with light" awards on Flickr yet posting those same photos to instagram has been a bust. You can't expect the unwashed masses of Instagram to have the same level of refinement as you find on Flickr.

InternetJunky posted:I just went back in this thread and saw my post from October where I mention I had 940 followers, and a few months later I've barely picked up another 40 despite putting a decent effort in to trying to grow that number. I know follower numbers are meaningless and all that, but given how my side-hustle is selling my photos those followers kind of aren't meaningless for me in reality. I would truly appreciate some advice if I can change anything about my instagram posting to increase followers (aside from "post better photos" since that's the obvious one). Are the hashtags you are using ones for pages that are likely to share your kind of work if they see it or just random search phrases? You could also try tagging some pages and see if it gets you any more attention. You have good pictures up there but getting followers on Instagram is hard these days with how most people already follow enough niche things to get their fill.

InternetJunky posted:Yeah, this is kind of what I thought as well, but I was just curious if I was missing something fundamental about the platform. I just try to post a few photos a week, post some interesting info with the photos, and keep promotional stuff to a minimum. I had hoped this would bring in followers who just wanted some nice wildlife stuff in their feed but I guess there's not as many of those users out there as I thought. The problem isn't that there aren't that many users that would be interested, it's that there are just so many people that offer the same thing and once you follow one or two of those you don't feel the need to follow anyone else that is doing something similar. Don't let it get you down or think you aren't taking good photos because you are, we're all just in a supersaturated social media space now and it's hard to get traction through normal, slow discovery methods. It's why so many of the big Instagrammers got there with bots that follow/unfollow or comment on tons of peoples posts to get attention. I'm pretty sure most of the comments I receive are bots as they have no context towards the photo in question. A lot of big people also get together to abuse the algorithm by flooding each other's pictures with likes and comments so it'll instantly get boosted to the top of the explore so tons of people will see it. Most of Instagram is super fake so don't worry too much about it, 900 followers is pretty nice if they are engaging with you.

bobmarleysghost posted:InternetJunky I'll be honest here, the stuff I see on your ig is just boring. Maybe that's why you're not getting the points or likes or faves or whatever? I wouldn't say it's boring, it's just real life. But when you're up against a few people on Instagram who can make reality look like a different world in their shots you are going to have a hard time. Magazines and stuff love those kind of shots but they don't WOW in the way that Instagram caters too. https://www.instagram.com/settysphotography/ I follow this dude who is semi-big and all his pictures feel rich in color and depth in a really cool way to see pop up on your feed. I think it might help that his niche within wildlife, for the most part, is Deer pictures which gives a specific reason to follow him.

Yeah I don't know why it's a bad thing to live nearby to a great location to do your photography instead of having to trek hours away to get anything.
