FLIGHT SAFETY TIP: Fatties out first

OK, a couple of things; first, a note on today's race at Spa. It is not on the Spa that we all know and love; rather, it is on the old, 14.1 kilometre historic course...the one they stopped using in 1978 because it was too fast and too dangerous. Here's a map comparing both circuits:

The long straight between Malmedy (its misspelled in this image) and Stavelot is not only almost five kilometres long, but it loses almost 130 metres of elevation from start to finish. It is very narrow, very bumpy and interrupted by the infamous Masta kink, a blind, high-speed chicane that claimed dozens of lives over the many years of racing. Top speeds are expected to be high - the cars will be running absolutely flat-out for a minute and a half, and in fact with the downhill assist they have been exceeding the top speed figures generated in-game by several kilometres per hour.

Second, in the absence of my design and tuning guide, I give you a video made by the Automation devs themselves about suspension setup. It does clear the air about a lot of what you should and should not be doing:

And just a friendly reminder; the next revision window closes at 11PM Pacific Time this Saturday night!

SHAKEUP - ABSOLUTE FAILURE, MODUS TURN HEADS AT SPA

SPA - Team Absolute Failure stunned onlookers today with a dominant one-two finish in Open class today at the 12 Hours of Spa, the winning #925 finishing a whopping three laps clear of championship-leading CMW, who struggled all day long to match their pace in qualifying. In Touring class, championship-leading FISH also struggled to find speed today, finishing in fifth and sixth. Modus Motors turned in a stunning performance today, the #2 Advantage making a daring pass through Stavelot on the last lap when the #99 Victorian Hooray made a misstep, losing critical exit speed leaving the corner and losing ground all the way on the long, fast run back to the finish line.

In spite of their struggles in Open, CMW won again in Sportsman, the #911 M4000B continuing that team's unbeaten streak and winning overall as well, averaging over 190 kilometres per hour over the twelve-hour race. Also in Sportsman, the #74 Modus Motors Advantage S, who finished fourth in class, set the highest trap speed of the day of 327 km/h going into Stavelott The same could not be said for Automurdermotive, who had noting short of a disastrous race. In front of all of their sponsors, for whom the team was throwing a lavish party, both Fireballs ground to a halt on lap 103 with overheating problems, the #34 ultimately retiring because of it. Both Robhols suffered issues as well, the #53 losing a section of bodywork early in the race and the #54 struggling with alternator issues all day.

Touring class once again produced a stunning race, with the top seven cars trading paint and positions all day long. In the end, daring won out for Modus Motors, stealing the victory from Victorian Hooray. The finishes of Modus and Victorian Hooray, along with the double points of this round, have closed up the Constructor Championship standings dramatically, with three teams within striking distance of leaders FISH. With the two crown jewels of the series coming up, the quadruple-points, 24-hour events at Le Mans and the Nordschliefe, the series is anything but decided...in any class.

TEST OF ENDURANCE - ABSOLUTE FAILURE, CMW AND VICTORIAN HOORAY WIN CHAOTIC LE MANS RACE

LE MANS - Chaos was the order of the day at that Le Mans 24-hour race today, with the field in all three SA-GT classes taking a brutal beating of accidents and mechanical failures. In the end, Absolute Failure notched their second win in a row, sweeping the top two spots in Open class, despite the second-place #925 car having a minor accident in the thirteenth hour. With their finish today, Absolute Failure leapfrogged up the Open class constructor standings, going from last to second place, and only 359 points behind CMW Motorsport, with half the season remaining.

In Sportsman and Touring, chaos reigned as cars collided, overheated or just plain gave up under the punishment of the Circuit de la Sarthe; in spite of the drama and chaos, CMW pulled through once again, running a cautious race, the M4000B continuing the team's unbeaten streak in Sportsman, and adding yet another overall victory to their scintillating season. Modus challenged them the whole race, but after the #73 retired in the eleventh hour after an accident involving the #11 Robhol Touring car, the #74 was forced to back off their pace and conserve the car so that the team could be assured to collect at least some constructor points for their efforts. Automurdermotive had a bittersweet day at La Sarthe, the #33 car overheating terminally on Lap 223 ending the race in the garage having completed just one lap over the requisite 70% distance to be officially classified. The #34 continued their stunning season, finishing fourth and well clear of fifth and sixth place GIBS, whose slow, conservative and methodical approach to the 24-hour race proved to be correct; the team enjoying their highest finish of the season. Their success was enough that GIBS moved up to fourth place in the Sportsman constructor championship, a handful of points behind third-place LATOY.

In Touring class, the #99 Victorian Hooray Corsair won their second race of the season, finishing a full lap ahead of their rivals at Modus Motors, and three laps ahead of third and fourth place FISH, who has struggled of late on the fastest tracks of the season. Fukushima struggled to find speed all day long, their cars never really looking all that settled on track as they drove to a fifth and sixth place finish. In spite of their lackluster performance, Fukushima was able to close the gap on second-place Modus in the constructor standings, with a mere 39 points now separating both teams after the #1 Modus retired in the ninth hour after an accident. Polkswagen matched their highest finish of the season, with the #7 Advantage finishing twelfth in class, matching their high-water mark set at the first race in Daytona, and deadening the blow of having the #8 car's race end in the third hour after a spectacular engine failure.

The SA-GT series now takes a short hiatus, the next round being at the historic and very challenging Circuit Pau in the far southwest of France; teams will be working on revisions over the next couple of days to ensure their cars are ready for the next leg of the series, which takes us to Pau, a short, narrow and tight street circuit, up the famously fast and sweeping Freiburg-Shauinsland hillclimb, around the Nordschliefe for a 24-hour test of endurance on one of the most famous tracks in the world, to sunny Estoril, with its large elevation changes, long straights and tight corners, then into Italy for the final race of this leg at Monza, where cars and drivers alike are tested on the punishing, high-speed layout there.

Next race we here at FISH will debut our Orso R - a little less powerful, but a little less thirsty too. Suspension has been tweaked and actually a modest chunk of performance was found in doing so. Turns out we forgot to switch our spring stiffness back during pre-season experimentation, so our pit crews have been running wrong values, although they were following our set-up manuals

UNBROKEN - CMW, FISH CONTINUE THEIR DOMINANT SEASONS

PAU - CMW Motorsport and FISH swept the podium in their respective classes this afternoon in the unusual split race at the historic Pau street circuit in the south of France today. The Touring-class race ran first on the tight, challenging circuit, the twenty cars creating at times what felt like a high-speed traffic jam as they wound their way around the circuit. After a short break, the Open and Sportsman class race went, the cars crossing the finish line as the sun was setting over the picturesque city. CMW Motorsport returned to the top step in Open class after two races without a win - their car, as well as their sibling car in Sportsman class, ideally suited to the tight, twisting layout. Victorian Hooray, reverting to their season-opening car after a string of unsatisfying performance in their revised entry showed similar pace but much-improved fuel consumption over their revision and ended up in fifth and sixth place. This result gives them some much needed breathing room over their rivals from Massachusetts Motorworks in the constructor standings, their lead increasing to a paper-thin 41 points.

In Sportsman class, the CMW M4000Bs stormed ahead to a class win and another overall victory, finishing a lap clear of their Open-class siblings. Rumour has it that over the short break, CMW held a stormy and contentious meeting at their corporate headquarters back in Koblenz on the subject of their participation in the 1976 season; whether a decision was reached or not is unknown at this time, but it seems as though there is considerable opposition in the boardroom to authorising a return to the Open class next year. With an all-new version of the 900-series road car likely to debut at the Geneva Auto Show later this year, the expense is thought to be too great for the small German manufacturer. Meanwhile, Modus Motors and Automurdermotive fought an absolutely brilliant battle all race for third through sixth; in the end, Modus just pipped both Fireballs, finishing mere seconds ahead of their rivals. Automurdermotive also seems to have left their overheating problems behind them now, with a minor revision to their car coming over the break. LATOY was the only car to fall victim to an accident in the Open/Sportsman race, with the #96 Rallimestari suffering a brake failure on lap 45. Of note, the #16 LATOY Ralliemies TKM touring car also suffered a minor brake failure in the Touring car race, though not serious enough to send that car spearing off the track like its bigger brother.

In the Touring-class race, FISH ran away with the race, the #13 car finishing a lap clear of everybody else, including their teammates in the #14 car. The win puts a a bit more of a gap between them and second-place Modus Motors, who had a difficult race today, finishing in sixth and seventh. With that result, FISH has opened up a 232-point lead over their rivals - not an insurmountable lead by any measure with almost half a season left, but still a litte more comfortable after a string of disappointing finishes nonetheless. This even without running their revised Orso R, which due to technical difficulties was not ready to race at Pau; the team is confident, however that the updated car should be at the Freiburg-Shauinsland hillclimb. Victorian Hooray finished third and fourth this afternoon, and with Fukushima finishing in a disappointing fifth and tenth, Victorian Hooray is only a handful of points from slipping into third place overall in the constructor championship. The #76 Massachusetts Motorworks 150 Touring suffered a scary accident at the halfway mark of the race, that car hitting the guardrail in one of the access points to the track, flipping end over end twice before coming to a stop on its roof. To everyone's relief, the driver climbed out of the car shaken but uninjured, their promising race over, their car running as high as seventh in class.

RACE REVISIONS ENGINEER FOUND DEAD IN PYRENEES

The senior FISH Racing engineer, Albierto Bartolli, has been found dead in the French mountains. He had been missing since stoming out of Friday evening's pre-racing weekend drinks reception in Pau. There, in a shock announcement, race directors had ruled that Bartolli's project, the much-vaunted Orso R, would not be allowed in this weekend's race. As it happened, FISH retained their lead and a made a strong 1-2 showing after a recent string of less-than-inspiring results. However, Bartolli was noticably absent from the victory celebrations. This morning, search and rescue dogs discovered his body, which was soon identified by the team, at the bottom of a cravasse high on the slopes. The coroner has begun an inquest, but is yet to officially declare a cause of death.

A FISH spokesperson, who declined to give their name but has since been verified by the racing team, said of Bartolli, "He had of late been showing signs of stress - his work was certainly not meeting expectations. First missing the Le-Mans deadline, and then this weekend here at Pau. Perhaps he was so disappointed with his development co-ordination. Perhaps it was suicide?".

Other unverified reports blame Basque separatists, who have been more active in the region in recent months. There are also rumours pointing towards a Congolese or Carnation connection, based on speculation around FISH's involvement with providing equipment and vehicles to the recently-toppled Portuguese dictator, Americo Tomas. FISH maintains that the allegations of military deals and supply discussions with the former Estado Novo have never been proven in a court of law.

Neither of these theories, however, explain the presence of 40.54 Swiss Francs - and no other currency, foreign or local - on Bartolli's person. Sources close to the pit crew say that they have become unnerved, and there is apparently talk in the garage of a retributive execution. One pit mechanic told the Herald that this was the exact amount the original Orso R had been over class budget limits, saying it was reminiscent of "mafioso messages" and had cast a "shadow of fear" over remaining team members. FISH executives dismiss these claims as "shoptalk chitchat" and add that "engineering staff with over-active imaginations would be well counseled to use such free time on improving their work, not penny-dreadful daydreams".

The Orso R has now been resubmitted for scrutiny, finalised by an interim Chief Revisions Officer who was not available for comment. After recently feeling pressure from rivals with speedier upgrade development, FISH's performance package is a late-season hope for the team, who are fighting to defend their group-leading spot. If it passes inspection, the newly-tuned car is scheduled to debut next race at Shauinslandbahn in the Black Forest, before heading to the Nurburgring. FISH Racing has been quoted as having "particularly high expectations" for the latter circuit.

SCHWARZWALD SHOCK - CMW, AUTOMURDERMOTIVE AND ABSOLUTE FAILURE WIN FREIBURG-SHAUINSLAND

FREIBRURG IM BREISGAU - In a result that shocked everyone on the mountain this afternoon, Automurdermotive won their first race of the season in convincing fashion, setting the fastest runs of the day in Sportsman class to unseat CMW Motorsport's M4000B from top of the podium, breaking that team's streak of eleven consecutive victories. The #34 Fireball dipped below five minutes and fourth seconds on both runs up the mountain, finishing five seconds clear of the second-place #912 M4000B. A jubilant celebration erupted on the podium, the CMW and third-place Modus drivers practically drowning the young winner in champagne.

In Open class, CMW won again, the #934 setting the fastest time of the day at 5 minutes 18.944 seconds on their second run up the mountain, when track temperatures had climbed and their sticky semi-slick tires were able to grip more effectively. In third place, Victorian Hooray returned to the podium for the first time since the BRC Rally, the #999 Super Sabre squeaking in just ahead of fourth-place Absolute Failure.

Touring class was close once again, with nearly every car setting times in the six-minute range, and a few dipping into the fives. In the end, Absolute Failure unexpectedly won, finishing three and a half seconds of the #14 FISH Orso R, marking the first race for FISH's updated car. Modus Motors notched up their second podium of the day in Touring as well, with the #2 Advantage finishing a mere two-tenths of a second behind the second-place Orso R. Fukushima had a miserable day, failing to close the gap in the Constructor standings after the #4 Dandy GTi crashed hard at the Holzschläger Matten-Kurve, dipping a wheel onto the cobbles on the shoulder and spinning off the track. The #3 Dandy GTi also struggle to find speed up the mountain, finishing sixth, behind the #76 Massachusetts Motorworks 150 Touring.

With the next race being the Nurburgring 24 Hours there is some controversy erupting in the Modus Motors garage; unnamed sources in the team fear that the car's excessive fuel consumption might be a serious issue at this track, and there is a very real concern that at the final event of the season at the Targa Florio that the car might struggle to complete a single lap of the seventy-two kilometre track without running out of fuel.

GREEN HELL - CMW, FISH DOMINATE INCIDENT-FILLED NURBURGRING RACE

NURBURG - Crashes ruled the day today in the 13th round of the SA-GT season, the challenging conditions at the Nordshleife causing no fewer than six major accidents. Touring class was affected especially badly, with the drivers in that class fighting tooth and nail for every possible constructor point. In the end, FISH dominated the race with their new and improved Orso R, their new car's speed finally validated on-track after a troubled development and a less than satisfying debut at the Freiburg-Shauinsland hillclimb. With their sweep of the top two spots on the podium, FISH now enjoys a commanding lead in the constructor standings, as Modus Motors, Fukushima and Victorian Hooray all struggled with accidents or breakdowns all day long. The #99 Corsair suffered a massive brake failure going into Metzgesfeld, and while the car was able to limp back to the garage its day was effectively over in spite of the valiant efforts of the mechanics, repairs taking well over eight hours to complete. The #1 Modus car suffered a serious accident as well in the 19th hour and was unfortunately unable to rejoin the race; however, since they completed just over the requisite 70 percent of the race winner's distance, they still managed to scoop up eighteen points to complement the 140 that the #2 car was awarded, having finished third in class. Polkswagen also suffered a very serious crash just coming back onto the Dottinger Hohe straightaway in the eighth hour, their car's day effectively ended as well.

Elsewhere, CMW swept the top two spots in both Open and Sportsman classes, with the #911 M4000B winning overall, finishing seconds ahead of their teammates and a lap clear of third- and fourth-overall Modus Motors. CMW's Open class cars were challenged all day long by Absolute Failure, their PoBMs trading places with the P4000Ts all day long and leading their class for several laps at a time. In the end, the CMW's better fuel efficiency won out, both cars making 15 stops over the twenty-four hours to Absolute Failure's 17. Considering the almost two-minute length of an Open-class pitstop, the two additional stops for Absolute Failure likely cost them the race. Massachusetts Motorworks 518 GTOs suffered from a pair of alternator failures within half an hour of each other, with one car leaving the garage as the other was entering. But the most spectacular failure in the Open class, and in fact all day long, belongs to the #999 Victorian Hooray Super Sabre. Less than an hour from the end of the race, that car's motor failed spectacularly, shooting flames and bits of formerly engine across the track, the driver narrowly escaping the ensuing fire, which quickly consumed the car.

MISSED OPPORTUNITY - FISH WINS BUT FAILS TO FINISH OFF COMPETITION IN PORTUGAL

ESTORIL - Fish notched their eighth class win of the season this aftetnoon at Autodromo do Estoril, but a careless accident by the class-leading #13 Orso R deprived the team of the chance to put some space between them and their rivals, who are still engaged in a pitched battle for second through fourth in the Touring class constructor standings. The #13 made contact with the wall on Lap 54, when they crested one of Estoril's steep hills to find the #13 GIBS Ladybird Sport limping back to the garage, one of its rear tires punctured. While the damage to the Orso R was minor, the time lost in the garage repairing the car was enough to relegate the #13 to a sixteenth place finish, just ahead of Polkswagen and Robhol.

Victorian Hooray was able to capitalise on FISH's mistake the best, filling out the podium and closing the gap on third-place Fukushima and second-place Modus Motors, the latter two engaged in a heated on-track battle along with Absolute Failure. Elsewhere, CMW continued their streak of excellent results, winning both Open and Sportsman in largely processional fashion; Absolute Failure and Modus Motors finishing in third in Open and Sportsman respectively. Up next is the last race in this leg, on the fast and historic Autodromo di Monza, just outside of Milan. Now I have a question. In this game, do we get to build cars akin to KSP or is it more serious? Because the idea of a car blowing up because of a parts botch humored me today.

The difference between a proper racing engine and a spectacular explosion is razor thin.

I only saw this by accident. Why did nobody tell me about this?

Also amusingly, I too made a version of ye olde Spa for automation using that very same map. I even have elevation!

FLIGHT SAFETY TIP: Fatties out first

PANDEMONIUM - CMW, FISH WIN AT MONZA; FANS RIOT AFTER RACE

MONZA - FISH and CMW Motorsport capped off the third leg of the 1975 SA-GT season with class wins at here at the Six Hours of Monza this afternoon, with the #911 CMW M4000B winning overall. In rather spectacular fashion, the Open-class CMW P4000Ts and the Sportsman Class M4000Bs finished the race first through fourth overall, with all their cars on the same lap no less. In Open class, Absolute Failure notched their fifteenth podium finish of the season, with the #926 Pit of Burning Money finishing third in class. The #925 PoBM was not so lucky, getting tangled up with the #975 Massachusetts Motorworks 518 GTO on the 88th lap. Both cars sustained damage and the time in the garage ended the #925's chance of a seventh podium finish on the season.

In Sportsman class, the #33 Automurdermotive Fireball, long overshadowed by young Ruben van Groot in the other car, finally notched that car's first podium finish of the season, finishing a lap down on first and second place CMW. The joyous news was overshadowed by the fact that in the hours leading up to the race, it was announced that the twenty-three year old van Groot had signed a deal with Ferrari to drive for their Formula One team in 1976. Team officials would not comment at press time as an official announcement regarding Automurdermotive's driver lineup for 1976 would be made in the next few days. Their podium finish gives Automurdermotive a little breathing room over fourth-place LATOY in the Sportsman constructor standings, now with a 42-point lead going into the final leg of the season. Automurdermotive has also indicated that they will be bringing updated cars to the next event, the Trento-Bondone hillclimb, an attempt to secure their position in Sportsman class and to make a run at fifth-place Absolute Failure in Touring class, where that team is separated from Automudermotive by a mere 57 points with five events remaining.

In Touring class, FISH dominated in their home race, the team's deliriously joyous fans storming pit road after the race to congratulate their countrymen on yet another excellent performance. The celebration continued well after the race ended, and at the time your correspondent submitted this article to the newswire, the fans had turned violent in a football-style spat of hooliganism, fighting one another and supporters of other teams in the series. Fukushima Motors returned to the podium for the first time since the BRC Rally, ending that team's six-race string of disappointing finishes, and buoying hopes for the Japanese manufacturer going into the last leg that they might be able to take one, possibly two spots in the constructor standings.

And just a friendly reminder that the final revision window closes Saturday night at 11PM Pacific Time (0700 GMT Sunday). There will be no revisions permitted after this point for the remainder of the racing season. Here is the status of all of our entries as of right now:

All entries, except for the Victorian Hooray Super Sabre, are still eligible for revisions.

And one more thing; the survey for the next Automation challenge is, as always, still open! have your say in what goes into the next version!

That CMW domination is getting quite boring. Good car, but very predictable.

As Colin Chapman said, if the car isn't falling apart after the race you are not doing it right.
