I once walked about 18 miles through the 100 Mile Wilderness in Maine in a day. Our map denoted a shelter that we expected to reach around 5:30 or 6:00 pm; only once we got there, no shelter or campsite was to be found. Since it was getting dark and starting to rain, we decided there was no other option but to keep walking to the next campsite which was several more miles down the trail. It's amazing how much more energy you can find deep in the recesses of your body when you're faced with having to spend the night in the mud trying to sleep on a bunch of roots and rocks.
