Also, these blu-rays are gorgeous. HD remastered old anime is baller as hell.

The first episode is just a drat good introduction all around.

One thing that's always stuck with me even as a dumbass teenager is how the second episode is paced. It's something I've really grown to love; we don't immediately see the climax that the first episode was building towards and we're left wondering what the hell happened for a little while. It was the first time I ever saw something like that in a show and it made a hell of an impression on me. It wouldn't have the same impact in movie format though, so I understand why the first Rebuild movie showed it chronologically.

I wanna type more things but I gotta get some sleep and maybe I'll be more coherent in the morning.

It also plays with the viewer a bit. Nobody says a word about Unit 01 going berserk and smashing the poo poo out of the Angel, so a fresh viewer might be led to assume that Shinji managed to beat it somehow. But then you get to the end, and welp.

I managed to quite thoroughly miss the simultaneous portion of the simulwatch, so I'm still on episode 1. I'd forgotten how goofy a lot of it feels, like the 50m/s missile and the three people giving their expressions of outrage at the failure of the mine in order of their seating positions, the closest sitting down to allow the next closest to exclaim in his turn.

Still, the art and character designs are still gorgeous even after 20 years.

Yeah it owns. I really don't like what Rebuild 1.11 does with the equivalent of these events by rewriting the events to go in chronological order, so EVA-01 going berserk happens more or less immediately after the events of "episode 1".

Spoiler tagged just in case.

Don't forget that Misato's voice is Sailor Moon and Evangelion was made at the height of that shows popularity. Eva loved casting it's female characters against type, Rei is Megumi Hayashibara, most famous for being female Ranma at the time.

Bit late cause I was exhausted last night.

These first two episodes were more than enough to hook me when I originally saw them. Although I had already seen Gunbuster and The Wings of Honneamise before so I had some idea of what to expect from Gainax.

They also did a pretty good job making me sympathetic to Shinji as well, Gendo is a truly hateful person from the outset and even Misato and her extremely messed up lifestyle didn't win me over. Highlight being Misato's 'joke' to Ritsuko over the phone, loving hell lady.

On rewatches I find it quite interesting how quickly Sachiel breaks through to the Geofront, it just blows a hole through the city/armour layer like nothing.

Indeed, indeed. Shinji might be a whiny, sullen sot, but it's not as if he doesn't have drat good reason to be as he is. One of my favorite establishing moments ever is the bit with Shinji, Gendo and the elevator: not a word between them, but an awkward silence that speaks volumes.

Also nthing all the praise for the pacing in these first episodes; everything's handled so tantalizingly, and I knew, I'd be seeing this one through.

(Much to my fathers chagrin, of course; the first time I watched, he watched with me, and he never really cared for anime. I was 15-16, as I recall.)

I have a similar story. I was watching it on my new desktop just prior to leaving for college in 2002 and my father walked into the room, declared "That's porn!" and walked to the basement to shut off the power.

From that point onward I was a lot more careful not to watch anime with other people around. Of course, that also led to me not watching ANY anime except things that were recommended to me for the next 10 years (pretty much only code geass and ttgl), so clearly it was worth the embarrassment.

The Evangelion blu-rays are out, and the busy holidays are behind us. It's time to watch the classic 1995 anime Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Keeping this OP brief for now. Everyone has heard of the show and if you haven't, then you are in for a treat and should just hop right in.

What's the schedule?

Simple: Starting tomorrow, Monday 12/28 we will be watching two episodes every M/W/F at 8 PM EST for the first 3 weeks. This has worked in the past so I figure, why fix what's not broken? On week 4, we'll watch 2 episodes on M/W/F like usual, but then the final two episodes of the TV series will be watched at the same time on Saturday. Then on Sunday, we'll watch End of Evangelion at the same time as usual. We won't be watching the Rebuild movies but if anyone wants to talk about them after End of Evangelion then they're more than welcome to do so!

Don't feel like you have to watch at the specified time though, no matter what time it starts timezones will make it a hassle for someone out there. If that time is inconvenient for you then watch and post about it after the scheduled time!

Tentative Schedule in picture format:

How do I watch it?

I wish I could say that there's a stream out there but the show has been out of print for awhile so unless you have an old DVD set lying around you'll have to find it with other methods. It's not hard to find the incredibly nice blu-ray rips (That are in 720p and hella large 1080p flavors, for all tastes and computers).

Stuff about spoilers

Evangelion is an old show and quite frankly I suspect most of the people participating will have seen it already. But not everyone! I know I've seen a few posters that have said this will be their first time. So I just have a simple request: I'd like for spoiler chat to be relevant to the episodes we've watched. Sometimes you might wanna talk about something in an episode that requires mentioning future content! Just spoiler tag it and it's all good. There's a general Eva thread for everything else if you have a pressing need to talk about stuff that's not relevant yet.

But likewise if you're a new viewer and you do get inadvertently spoiled then I'm sorry but it's an old, very popular show so that stuff just happens!

Anything else?

Just remember to have a good time watching and talking about the classic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, and be excellent to each other :cheerdoge:

I'm doing this but I'm not holding back. I finished episode 8 last night. I will hold back on the discussion and keep it to the episodes watched. Hopefully, I won't get too confused.

I never saw this before, so I didn't have a clue what happened after the first battle. I assumed the evil angel went away on its own and all was fine for some reason.

Some thoughts:

1. The idea of having to use a power cord is really great. They could've invented some nuclear fusion or fission power source, but instead, they give the mech some sort of tether. Really nice touch.

2. Shinji's desire to not pilot the mech is fairly realistic. I wish they'd give us more detail on how he was selected, though. Just because he's the son of the director isn't the reason, I'm sure. That's just coincidental.

3. They don't tell us why the director treats his son like poo poo, and we should know that. I hope we find out. My guess is that the mom died in some way and Shinji is just a painful reminder of the wife, etc. The director is an rear end.

Sorry. I wasn't being clear. I watched the first 8 episodes, so I did see what happened. What I was trying to get across is that, since I'd never seen the show before, and they cut from his mech getting curb stomped to him being in the hospital, and the day is sunny and bright, I didn't know what happened to the evil angel and assumed that it went away. Obviously, Shinji didn't defeat it because, well, we saw him get his rear end kicked coming out of the starting gate.

Later, I was happily surprised to see what happened after Shinji more or less lost it and somehow managed to destroy the evil angel.

I guess another cool thing about the show is that Shinji, the reluctant hero, is really incredibly gifted in terms of sync'ing with his mech and fighting -- even if it's on an unconscious level. My guess is, and this is only a guess, as I've not seen past episode 8, that a large part of his growth will be Shinji's merging his conscious abilities with his unconscious abilities and becoming fairly bad rear end overall.

Also, the fact that he's able to do more than Rei and is less willing, less trained, and less forthgoing about it all is pretty nice. At least, Shinji can do more than Rei can right now. So far, Rei's just been wounded and we've been threatened with the possibility of her piloting a mech by herself, but she hasn't yet except for when she shields Shinji and that was only barely piloting it and she still ended up wounded.

I also hope Shinji turns the tables on his father somehow. The dad says, "Hey Shiji, you're pretty bad-rear end now. Let's do lunch." and Shinji says, "Why would I want to do that?"

something to always keep in mind about shinji and his desire to not get in the robot is that any damage you take in an evangelion gets mentally transfered to you.

it's kinda just thrown out in one sentence when ritsuko tries to calm shinji down about how it's not real, but in ep 1 when unit 01 it's arm gets ripped off, he feels as though he just lost an arm. when unit 01 gets pounded in the head he feels like that's happening to him, when (not really important spoiler for ep 3) he gets set on fire for several seconds he feels like he's burning alive and so on and so forth.

the fact that shinji is A still keeping at it and B not a complete wreck mentally is pretty heroic, imo

I cannot claim to have gone through a transcendent experience after watching Neon Genesis Evangelion, which was apparently a thing for other people, because the hype and the rumors were so huge that in the end I was already expecting something crazy rather than being surprised by everything. But my appreciation for the TV series increased by leaps and bounds the second or third time around, so I agree that it has definitely stood the test of time.

One way or another, it is a very important work of art/entertainment and deserves to be critically discussed. There's a lot of both artistic and technical merit to be found here, in terms of animation as well as characterization and narrative, regardless of whatever you want to make of Hideaki Anno's underlying message (and whatever he is intending to do with the new films). That said, even if my posts won't be very frequent, I hope to try and catch up with the simulwatch this weekend.
