Why is this not getting replies? Weird-rear end old cartoons are LIFE. Here's my first contribution and one of my favorite short films of all time - the 1978 classic "Ringing Bell" (Chirin no Suzu) which now only exists on VHS rips and this Youtube upload: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8H4urzLIBlc There's a dubbed version as well but I wouldn't recommend it. There's a completely unnecessary narration over the quiet moments that kills the eerie mood. "Ringing Bell" was based on a children's book by a WWII Japanese child soldier who saw horrors he could never directly talk about. He write the story of a naive sheep gaining the strength of a wolf and thus losing his mind in the process as a way to cope with his pain. It seemed to do the trick as he went on to have a healthy career as a cartoonist for decades afterward.

Holy gently caress. I'd never seen or heard of ringing bell before. Did they show it to kids in Japan, or is it just that the people in the US thought cartoon=kids' film?

Domus posted:Holy gently caress. I'd never seen or heard of ringing bell before. Did they show it to kids in Japan, or is it just that the people in the US thought cartoon=kids' film? "Ringing Bell" is pretty much ignored outside of Japan, where it's considered a classic (apparently). I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of the original picture book for a while now. Yeah, it was totally marketed as a kid's film because of the "all cartoons are for kids hurr dee durr" attitude that still kinda exists today. However, it was seriously shown to kids in Japan back then and the kids didn't even bat an eye to it because they're hardcore little bastards. I love the US's cartoons but we're kinda soft when it comes to getting experiential in emotional tones and themes. Save for pioneers like Bakshi, Chung, and some music video specialists there's not that much to find (if you want to prove me wrong please do - I would be crazy stoked to see it). You need to go to England, Germany, the post-Soviet States, and especially East Asia for the real mindfucks. Behold the kinda-forgotten Yellow-Submarine but better-looking epic "Fehérlófia" (Son of the White Mare). It's kinda long and it's worth it just to see the first few minutes of psychedelic paint-on-glass awesomeness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwzqtF2W6RQ IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0083931/ A man is born the son of a horse with superpowers and uses them to do battle with legendary dragons. Also, loads of bizarre sex imagery because Eastern Europe in the 70's.

Pre-WWII cartoons terrify the poo poo out of me. Modern-day footage of violence I can handle, but there's something about this rubber hose poo poo that is poured right out of the human collective nightmare. Tex Avery once said in an interview that most of the animators back them were high out of their goddamn minds on over-the-counter liquid heroin and cocaine-laced "cough drops", and seeing what they produced I believe it. There's a cartoon i hope someone here has any clue what it could be...I'm pretty sure it was animated somewhere in Europe in the late seventies. It was about some kind of goofy super hero and his dimwitted sidekick going to an island to try and stop some evil genius who sent out tiny self-guided rockets that would hunt down anything with a certain amount of brainwaves then embed themselves in their victim's skull, rendering them stupid and remote-controllable...This was long rear end time ago since i've seen this (1980-81) and can't find anything about it on Google.

Can only find some short clips (from terrible dark cuts) Sheeeeeeeeit I forgot all about this. I saw it as a kid and was blown away by it. The scene where Samson slowly inches towards a raft with three guys in it was especially unsettling. The guys are scared but not sure what to do. It's not until he's literately touching the raft that they shoot him, causing him to immediately flip the raft and all three die in the icy water. No music plays in this scene. The camera lingers on the upside down raft bobbing on the surface before gradually fading to black. Eerie. Here we have highlights from "The Brave Frog". I have no idea why this loving thing exists. It's just horrible event after horrible event with no payoff or direction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXdk_dnUit8 Mr.Chill has a new favorite as of 20:26 on Mar 21, 2016 |

I'm going to try posting at least one pre-WW2 cartoon for every later one. The classic "How a Mosquito Operates" from 1912, assuming a mosquito the size of a toy poodle, with a capacity of at least a pint. It doesn't need a 6 minute runtime, but it's definitely ancient and weird: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77cn30IeZPU And here's the psychedelic 'Moth Song' from Shinbone Alley, a cartoon film based on Don Marquis' 'Archy and Mehitabel': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fsvUAhKfzI Shinbone Alley was not a hit even in 1971, partly due to the fact it's kinda gritty. Archy has been transformed, Kafka-style, from (presumably) human into (normal-sized) cockroach after jumping from a bridge, and attempts suicide several times more; his cat pal Mehitabel gets into abusive relationships, and sings fatalistically about how she'll end up a victim of the catgut trade. Shinbone Alley is a real mishmash of animation styles, but still quite entertaining and it's a shame it's not called 'Archy and Mehitabel', as Don Marquis fans would probably like to know of its existence. I haven't found in complete form on Youtube

I get the impression that a lot of these early cartoons from the 20's and 30's are sort of like CGI stuff from the early to mid 90's; people were watching it mostly to admire the novelty of the animation and weren't expecting any sort of plot to speak of. You'll notice how a LOT of those cartoons are just cool animations of people dancing and weird (but cool looking) stuff happening. That balloon cartoon is a really good example of this; the plot is kind of creepy and weird, but the idea of a bunch of balloon people fighting off a guy with pins is a good setting for a bunch of neat/unique animation.

To contribute, here's one of my top ten favorite movies of all time - "Angel's Egg" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcBjr8gt2Xs "Angel's Egg", 1985, directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) made it as a way to communicate the pain he felt after losing his faith in Christianity. There is very little dialogue, focusing mostly on the atmosphere and music to tell the simple but powerful story. It took me a couple re-watches to fully grasp the imagery, including getting a friend who was raised Roman Catholic to point out some of the symbolism, which was great because that ending shot was just confusing to me before he explained it. It's overall a wonderfully rich experience that I would encourage everyone who likes passion projects to take a look at. It's not long, about 70 minutes, and unfortunately pretty obscure. I would LOVE to see a blu-ray release to get a fuller effect. I mean, just LOOK at some of this: Each frame is like a dang painting. Mr.Chill has a new favorite as of 13:44 on Mar 22, 2016 |
