"Midori" or "Chika Gentō Gekiga: Shōjo Tsubak" (warning, not safe for any sort of minds especially if you like children and puppies) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O8ijfNpidU Kinda cheating here because it's 1992. I honestly thought this was early 1970's when I first saw it. VERY interesting story behind this one. Apparently the character of Shojo Tsubak (chrysanthemum girl) is a stock character a lot like the Litttle Match Girl that comes up a lot in old Japanese folk stories. Basically, everything bad that could possibly happen to a prepubescent orphan happens to this character. That's the story. The settings and timelines change but the concept is always the same. "Midori" was made over the course of five years by one solitary dude - Hiroshi Harada. He made the backgrounds, animation, script, everything by his lonesome. The film didn't get much of a distribution for obvious reasons (children and puppies) but he didn't seem to mind. Here's a DVD extra interview with Harada that goes into more detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShF8AgQJ7Ik So, in short, this is an extremely disturbing film that I'm not sure has a point behind it. When it was over, I thought "That wasn't going where I expected it to, but now that it's over, I'm not sure why it exists." Mr.Chill has a new favorite as of 01:46 on Mar 27, 2016 |

Micro Commando Diatron-5 (1985, S. Korea) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYJUfjsSiBY Things you will learn while watching Diatron-5: - All of Earth's defenses depends on an unusually intelligent teenage girl with no name. This is advertized and everyone knows it. - Humans have entire societies with castles and ancient cultures living inside their bodies - We have glands that produce strawberry ice cream. No, not pinkish blood, honest to god strawberry ice cream. - Today I saw a screaming harpy share a 50 Shades moment with a Barney-voiced robot - Shrink rays sound like someone playing ping pong in an echo chamber. - "Let's see who you really are" Scooby Doo reveals don't have the same effect if no one has any idea who the revealed person is. - Dr. Beeeaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr is having none of your poo poo. - Those outer space fight scenes in Macross and Gundam would be SO MUCH BETTER if they had music box songs playing over them. This movie made me physically ill. I don't know if it's the animation frame rate, the hideous color pallet, the nauseating sound design, or the story which seems to stubbornly defy any kind of logical flow. YOU decide!

Plethora, you can't mention that Midori one without mentioning that one guy made made of it on his own and that it's basically some hosed up guro type poo poo. Absolutely nothing goes right in it. It is one of the most hateful, spiteful films I have ever seen. The only thing I can think of that tops it in sheer unpleasantness is Go Nagai's (yes, that Go Nagai, of Mazinger and Cutie Honey fame) Violence Jack. It's just... not nice. Absolutely nothing goes right in it. It is one of the most hateful, spiteful films I have ever seen. I did bring up that one guy made it and that it's hosed up, but I guess I didn't push HOW hosed up it is enough. Maybe I'm just desensitized. I honestly don't see why Violence Jack has the reputation of being the worst of the worst. Sure, one could list off the things that happen, but look at how everything is presented there. It's straight-forward. It's trying really hard to shock us by taking things the author's already seen from other movies and playing around with it like a kids writing gory stories on the playground. There's no real oomph there, just surface attempts at shock that hold up because there's actual plot and characters involved. In fact, it's that stability of the writing that points to the gore just being there to gain a reputation and sell OVAs. I honestly blame Bennett the Sage for making such a huge stink about it. I watched it as soon as he started ranting about how it's the worst of the worst and ended up disappointed. I felt I could ask any angry 13-year-old on the street to write the worst thing he could think of and end up with something similar. I personally found Midori, Ringing Bell, and Mouse and his Child worse in terms of giving off an overall "This is not the product of a healthy mind" feeling. None of them follow much classical writing logic and seem to be a madman's attempt at communicating something very personally important that you and I aren't able to grasp because we're, well, not crazy. To contribute, I give you the German film "Felidae" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiKn-vPXFCc SERIOUSLY NOT MIND SAFE Felidae is.... well, if we were talking strictly as a list of content, it's one of the most hardcore movies I've ever seen. The fact that it stars beautifully realistically animated cats doesn't diminish this. I'll list off some highlights (spoilers): - The love interest is beheaded two minutes after we meet her. We focus on her open mouth and staring eyes for an uncomfortable amount of time - Another is found dead with her belly ripped open, her dead fetuses strewn around her while the father has a mental breakdown - Mass religious suicide via electrocution - Gregor Mendel (wtf?) with decomposing cats on threads, making them dance like marionettes. This scene goes on for so long it goes from being disturbing to almost funny - Naziism is a plot point - The villain is split open while jumping. His organs spill out on him and onto the camera - Watching many, many cats being tied down, their skulls opened, and acid dripped onto their exposed brains while they scream and struggle before gradually slowing into death. This part is so horrific I can't watch that scene. It's one of the only moments in cinema that have this effect on me. I mean, compare that with the likes of Salo or A Serbian Film and it's not that far off. poo poo, am I loving this thread up with exploitation animation? I seriously don't want to make people uncomfortable. I can cut it out an only post non-disturbing stuff if you guys would prefer that. Mr.Chill has a new favorite as of 01:53 on Mar 27, 2016 |

Recently became aware of this one: Belladonna of Sadness (The Tragedy of Belladonna/Kanashimi no Belladonna) 1973 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kanashimi_no_Belladonna From Wiki: "Kanashimi no Belladonna (哀しみのベラドンナ literally, Belladonna of Sadnesss?), also known as "The Tragedy of Belladonna",[3][4] is a 1973 feature film produced by the Japanese animation studio Mushi Production and distributor Nippon Herald Films. It follows the story of Jeanne, a peasant woman who is raped which leads to her being accused of witchcraft, and is notable for its graphic and suggestively erotic, violent and psychedelic imagery." Apparently there's a thing underway o restore the film and give it an HD release sometime this year. http://www.indiewire.com/article/watch-long-lost-belladonna-of-sadness-gets-a-psychedelic-nsfw-trailer-20160218 http://www.japansociety.org/event/belladonna-of-sadness-4k-restoration That's pretty fuckin' rad. Nooooo don't die, thread! Nido to Mezamenu Komori Uta (A Lullaby of Sleep and Death) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jgvqFAUaG8 That guy who made Midori? Yeah, this was his previous project. Kinda pretentious but in a Ralph Bakshi in Japan kind of way. It's a commentary on how (in the 1960's, at least) if someone, a child even, has a weird but harmless physical difference (in this case buck teeth) everyone from adults to other kids will want him dead. It perfectly captures how it feels to be abused as a kid for being different and how alone and angry you feel.It also includes the post-war confusion and rapid expansion the Japanese experienced in the 60's that must have stressed everyone right the gently caress out. Pendulum https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJBt2V5-Q-E A three minute masterpiece that condenses a sixty year marriage into a short animation. All the ups and downs and struggles and triumphs of life. This loving thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cKoFOCo7rk. Especially starting at about 5:00 in. I wouldn't have found it all these years later if others hadn't been similarly scarred by the spiders (in both multiple-baby and large-cyclopean varieties) and the film bubbling and melting. I also didn't like the ASBESTOS on the curtain at the beginning; I didn't know what asbestos was back in second or third grade when I saw this short, but the word seemed foreboding. eta: poo poo, I didn't notice it way back earlier in the (admittedly short) thread.
