It looks like there's a few people streaming at least now. The PvE looks completely tolerable and the PvP actually looks pretty decent? I'd have to actually play it to see how it feels, but it looked like there was some good skill based stuff going on at least. I'll be interested to see what the population looks like in another month, but I wish all the best for anyone who decides to try it out!

Mjolnerd posted:this seems.... low? even for such a niche audience, I expected more interest. It certainly doesn't sound like much. But likely almost everyone playing is interested in this very specific kind of game, given there's no marketing. You'd have to care enough about PvP games and DAoC to actively seek out information about them to even really know about it. That's good for the people playing at least. The real question is if it's enough to keep the lights on at the studio. It's not like Return of Reckoning where it's a labor of love that doesn't have salaries to pay, so I'm thinking probably not unfortunately.

Zlodo posted:I just think it will take time, the thing is that unless they drastically changed direction since I hosed around in the alpha all the good stuff is crafted and the good mats aren't trivial to farm either, so a player driven economy should emerge in time. The website outlines their intent as a sort of SWG economy. Good stuff is crafted, good crafting requires interdisciplinary cooperation, and good materials are hard to get. So to make the best armor you need gatherers who have bodyguard players to escort them, some folk specializing in turning those mats into armor components, then your specialist armorsmith putting it all together. Then you can set up vendors in your Eternal Kingdom to sell your output. In theory, you end up with an in game reputation for your quality products, and that drives players to buy from you. How that shakes out in reality has yet to be seen, but at least the idea is sound.

Just applied myself, might as well play with people if Dregs are actually going to come out

Dipping into blacksmithing now I am amazed at the depth of the crafting system, but also just how much resources are required to make basically anything. Wood to turn into coal, to smelt metal bars which take 18 ore each and at least two bars are required for any component. But different metals give different traits on the components, with different alloys also possible from different ores. A finished piece will take 3-5 components, and at least one of them will come from another discipline like leather working. That one will require meat to turn into thread, to use to refine hide into leather pieces, to use to make the component. Like, there's so much going on, and it's really cool, but you need to really focus on the pack pigs or have a large group focused on gathering to generate enough raw resources to craft in volume.

Mjolnerd posted:its the depth of the SWG crafting system without the SW fans to keep the economy healthy! That's how it's shaping up! In theory you can put a vendor in your EK to sell your output and presumably buy resources. I haven't read anything about being able to control what they buy, just that you can stock them and set the sell price. But even that will require a mason for the building and a geomancer for the land plot, not to mention VIP to make your EK public. Lots of cool good stuff going on overall with crafting, but there needs to be a lot more than 2500 total players to make a real economy work. As it is you're just going to have everyone running around in mixed cloth looted from mobs and starter weapons because crafting is too much of a hassle due to population.

Isn't there some sort of vassalage or fealty system where your guild can work for a larger one? That would work out okay if there's only a few of us farting around.

Lorem ipsum posted:Melee ranger seems good. I made a hammer throwing cleric and it has a bunch of funny CC abilities but doesn't do any damage. My main issue is i'm not sure I understand how damage scales. My weapon says it does like 50 damage but I do like 300 damage per hit. I only have 6.4% damage bonus so ??? there's a damage bonus, a damage type bonus, a damage type armor penetration rating, and damage specific armor ratings. Those all go into the sausage machine and then you turn the handle and get your damage roll. Unironically I wondered about this myself, but a cursory google didn't bring me any reddit effortposts or anything about it.

I'm watching a siege defense on a twitch stream and the attacking alliance used a pack of burrowing guinea's to ambush a flanking force the defenders had in reserve. That's pretty cool, I'm glad to see that tactics like that have a place.

Zotix posted:And what benefit is there to gathering outside of the Dregs in say Godfall or Sky reach or w/e? Other than say trying to obtain the exploration discipline drops for your resources? It's safer. You lose your entire inventory if killed in the Dregs, but only your gold in Sky Point (and only half gold in God's Reach). The trade off is that the nodes are lower quality, so they have lower drop rates for special things like materials and discs.

Zotix posted:Right, but those are two completely different gear sets. Like most guilds are chilling in the dregs, so everything I farm in SkyPoint wouldn't really be used to advance my character other than just farming up the advanced gathering disciplines. Right, the advantage of safety only factors in if you're solo gathering. There's nothing about this game that's really made for solo players though. If you've got people to play with there's no reason not to do it in the Dregs. Just keep your eyes peeled for the gathering groups from the mega guilds unless you want to give them everything you've gathered.

Nunes posted:Additionally, you can only get to lvl 32 in Sky point as there aren't higher level monsters to kill. In order to progress to 35, you will eventually need to get in the Dregs or similar campaigns. Are there vessel parts that come from monsters? I thought they all came from graves, but I haven't messed with it much since I'm not playing with any big guilds and don't ever expect to end up with a higher quality crafted vessel.

I've been wandering around with pubs in sky point and honestly with even a modicum of coordination in chat FvF keep warfare is pretty fun! I could see that ruleset being a good home for small guilds that can't risk the megaguilds rolling over them in Dregs if they ever launch a world under that rule set. If even a couple of sub 10 man guilds coordinated to take and build up a keep they'd be a force to be reckoned with. I'm having way more fun than I thought I would with this game. The structure lends itself well to a lot of the community based nostalgia from games like UO, SWG, DAoC, etc. The core gameplay is solid, with tons of flexibility and variety within a given class. There's plenty of smaller problems, like with any game, but there's a lot to like. I don't have a lot of hope for the longevity of the game, with $30M in VC money to pay back and 0 marketing to drive interest. But if you're on the fence and have even a modicum of patience for pubs or a few friends to play with it's definitely worth checking out.

Moon pretty consistently wrecks in sky point so that's nice. Doesn't the lunarium have wolf spawns? I need more and easier access to those anyway to making skinning kebabs. E: how are coordinating? Guild chat is pretty quiet most nights when I'm on. I authed on discord and got the Goon role assigned but didn't see any new channels.
