And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Rich and Establishment. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our Carson would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave... So now, less than five weeks later, you can go up on a steep hill in Chattanooga and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

To be fair, I'm not sure the blame lies entirely (or even mostly) on the populace this time. Jack Conway's ground game was horrible. I got maybe one person knocking on my door in a democratic stronghold (Louisville). The exact same thing happened with Grimes, but at least she was visible in the public eye, even if it was for the wrong reasons. Toss on top of that that the elections were practically drat hidden and on a weird date in the first place, and you get the turnout you did. Hell, I wouldn't have even known about when the election was if I didn't follow D&D. It really was the perfect storm of poo poo but the result is exactly what you'd expect. I've said it before, but Kentucky is a post apocalyptic wasteland outside of Louisville and Lexington. It's bad enough these days that my wife and I are considering moving... to Texas.

In Kentucky, it seems like either the population is going to dive into unneccesary suffering or the federal government will pick up the slack. For a state like Mississippi or New Mexico, it makes some sense to have a high level of federal dependence; if Kentucky is banking heavily on federal grants for its citizens to not suffer and die, and it "works", then why wouldn't states like Arizona or Georgia follow?

What worries me the most about Kentucky is that Bevin is the kind of insane rear end in a top hat to go the Kansas/Wisconsin route and this state is in worse shape than those two were at the start. People in rural places also voted for him because "He is a businessman and will bring jobs to our meth riddled shithole county"

When asked why he did it, he said it was because of 9/11.
