Nerds get together, they start playing off each other, the jokes get darker and more tasteless and before you know it, someone's cheerfully dropping N-bombs and rape jokes and not realising that not everyone finds the same things funny. And rather than going 'oh poo poo, this was a bad idea, I should apologise', they just wind up doubling down and making themselves look even worse (see last year's infamous Crash Bandicoot run). There's rarely ever any malice in it, just idiots who don't know how to judge a situation because they're used to echo chambers.
