For nonfiction biographical type stuff I'm an audiobook guy. I just don't need to concentrate too hard on the details of lost sailors or whatever. For things like Neal Stephenson, if it's not a big hardcover affair it feels wrong. For things like Philip K Dick, I feel slightly embarrassed if it's one of the new trade paperback editions and actively seek out the trashy old editions with the hilariously inaccurate cover art.
