People used to do this with transistor circuits piled up to build logic gates. FPGAs are magic and I love them. Xilinx?

Also RS232 is 3 wires (2 if you only need to send data one way). RS232 is easily the most robust serial interface standard, unless you want to talk about it's high voltage siblings.

I'd post a cool picture of the amazing LIM crate setup at SLAC end station A, but iPhoto is horrible and is stupid.
