Yeah. They have the rate of fire but it's one shot per pull so it gets off on a technicality. One way or another it can't last forever though.

That being said, unless they've been really damned quiet about it that guy who claims that the ATF banned them is full of poo poo or just doesn't know what the gently caress he's talking about. It's still a subject of some debate where they should fall in terms of legality and they're what fueled the shrieking back and forth from people about gun control around where I live recently.

What Troika's probably thinking about (And did actually mention to try and bullshit his way through claiming that they were banned now that I reread his post.) is the Akins Accelerator. Which the ATF did come down on like a sack of bricks in 2006 after it turned out that the creator was stupid enough to submit a differently working version of the bump fire add-on for ATF approval than the one they intended to sell. They really weren't happy when they figured out that the version they approved for usage wasn't the version that was being sold on the general market.

The Akins Accelerator got banned because the creator tried to run a fast one on the ATF, yes. However, bump fire mechanisms in general are not specifically illegal and you can buy them from any number of retailers online.

Fallen Rib
We need more hymns against the siege of unbelievers. More.

quote:

When I was a young man I carried me pack
And I lived the free life of the rover
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback
I waltzed my Matilda all over
Then in 1915 my country said: Son,
It's time to stop rambling, there's work to be done
So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun
And they sent me away to the war

And the band played Waltzing Matilda
When the ship pulled away from the quay
And amid all the tears, flag waving and cheers
We sailed off for Gallipoli

It well I remember that terrible day
When our blood stained the sand and the water
And how in that hell they call Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter
Johnny Turk, he was ready, he primed himself well
He rained us with bullets, and he showered us with shell
And in five minutes flat, we were all blown to hell
He nearly blew us back home to Australia

And the band played Waltzing Matilda
When we stopped to bury our slain
Well we buried ours and the Turks buried theirs
Then it started all over again

Oh those that were living just tried to survive
In that mad world of blood, death and fire
And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive
While around me the corpses piled higher
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head
And when I awoke in me hospital bed
And saw what it had done, I wished I was dead
I never knew there was worse things than dying

Oh no more I'll go Waltzing Matilda
All around the green bush far and near
For to hump tent and pegs, a man needs both legs
No more waltzing Matilda for me

They collected the wounded, the crippled, the maimed
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The armless, the legless, the blind and the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And when the ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where me legs used to be
And thank Christ there was no one there waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity

And the Band played Waltzing Matilda
When they carried us down the gangway
Oh nobody cheered, they just stood there and stared
Then they turned all their faces away

Now every April I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me
I see my old comrades, how proudly they march
Renewing their dreams of past glories
I see the old men all tired, stiff and worn
Those weary old heroes of a forgotten war
And the young people ask "What are they marching for?"
And I ask myself the same question

And the band plays Waltzing Matilda
And the old men still answer the call
But year after year, their numbers get fewer
Someday, no one will march there at all

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me?
And their ghosts may be heard as they march by the billabong
So who'll come a-Waltzing Matilda with me?

All you need is one sword, and intimate knowledge of the way it sings through the air. Familiarize yourself with the innards of lesser men. Once you can envision your blade in a specific place in the body, simply call upon the remembrances of your training and your indomitable will shall make it find its way there true enough.

These lackeys who surround themselves in collections of metal do so to put off this one true training - the only one that matters. Because they do not know the true art of violence, their horde only serves to fill the role of a larger offering to their eventual conquerers.

Is it because of that tired old racist stereotype of black men urban thugs wielding a Glock? I mean, I can't think of any reason off hand why you'd target them for a ban.

Cheap handguns account for the vast majority of gun violence, while assault rifles are almost never used.

Although you have correctly identified the problem with the majority of gun control regulation: they target weapons that are rarely used for gun violence (but they look oh so scary!) and the other problem is that gun control fails because the US has so many cheap handguns already in circulation.

I'd rather Obama and the Democrats realize this is a loser of an issue and quit handing the Republicans easy dunks for campaign ads. We're like three years removed from a man literally murdering an entire 1st-grade classroom and in the wake of that the most milquetoast background check legislation supported by 80+% of Americans couldn't even make it to the floor for a vote. I know that sucks but it's reality and for the foreseeable future it ain't changing so IMO it would be a good idea to stop giving conservative politicians ammo (heh) to stir up their insane single-issue-gun-voter base.

That doesn't really have a whole lot to do with most people not having an assault rifle, let alone having one at hand whenever they get it in their mind to shoot someone for whatever, but alright.

To be fair, any new law stirs up the conservative gun voters. Hell, even the prospect of new laws sends them into a tizzy. The buying frenzy after Obama was elected made it impossible to buy guns or ammo at a reasonable price.

A lot of political capital has been thrown away on gun laws that don't actually do anything. Going after things like assault weapons and fifty-caliber rifles didn't accomplish much other than rallying the right and eroding the support of left-leaning gun owners. America would have been better served by going after cheapo garbage handguns like Lorcins, or really going after the people that traffic guns, ramping up investigations of shops, prosecuting the hell out of straw buyers, etc.

While there are a number of social and economic factors that drive gun violence, there's no reason that people can't work on the problem from both ends. We could... but we won't. It's much better for politicians to just squabble endlessly than to accomplish anything.

Shakenbaker posted:

that 80% of people support it and a lunatic fringe is opposing it means it's good politics to hammer the issue, not bad politics

gun nuts are not going to become sane people just because you stop suggesting that maybe crazy people shouldn't have guns (though here, you can see where the slippery slope is a thing they could be worried about), they will find something else to rant and rave about

like, say Obama drops any movement towards gun control today, pledges never to do it. the paunines and lejackals won't go "ok, seems reasonable, i'll vote democratic now", they'll start frothing at the mouth that there are people in the democratic camp who don't support their right to give assault weapons to drunken toddlers and demand those people be expelled from the party too (you will likely hear rants about diane feinstein as part of this)
