I guess it's just because bronze is a valid material and every single RPG designer is also obsessed with the Olympics for some reason? You end up hitting the bullshit fantasy metals pretty quick if you restrict yourself to period-available metallurgy. (Silver strong enough to block a blow and gold sturdy enough to hold an edge are also bullshit fantasy metals but let's ignore that for now.)
