These guys actually made a He-Man fan film trilogy. Nearly three and a half hours of runtime!

Part 1: The Wizard of Stone Mountain (71 minutes)
Part 2: The Fountain of Life (57 minutes)
Part 3: The Trials of Darksmoke (73 minutes)

Again, I would watch this over that over-produced badly composed, greenscreen wank material. The fact that they are using locations and have wide shots and poo poo makes it about 10 times more appealing to watch, it's camp nonsense but because their budget is basically petrol and pizzas they can produce that 3 hours and a half of stuff. I have way more respect for someone who says "gently caress it, lets get out and shoot this" than someone who says "I need 12 grand for poo poo greenscreen and bad wigs"

As for the original Nightwing fan film and the lack of enthusiasm, I totally get the frustration of pouring a lot of work into a project and everyone to kinda say "meh" when they are not questioning the costumes. That is the problem with adapting a well known property. If you guys ditched the Nightwing theme and dropped all that baggage of quality and expectation expected, then maybe you would have had something more.

My main problem was that the script was shite. I did not care about anyone in it. You need to approach it from "How do I make a good short?" As opposed to a good fan film. The best short films exist in their own world and get in quick, make their point and get out. For your next project, even if it is a fan movie. Write the story first and insert the property next and build around the core concept.
If you had an idea about a guy who escapes a super-hero cleanly and eventually gets cocky and starts bragging about it and his pride is his undoing and all that poo poo. It does not matter if it is Batman or The Punisher or Squirrel Girl. The basic plot and beats are all the same and you work from that and hang your story on the basic premise.

I think it's the main problem with most fan shorts. They get excited and want to jam it all in. Like CelticPredator said: Bring something new to it, don't just BE it.

That's what I liked about CelticPredator's Invader Zim teaser - he could have packed in 5 minutes of dialogue and running around alleys striking dumb poses but instead it was restrained as all get out.

Yeah, its clear you and the other Nightwing guys are a lot more competent than your typical fan crew, but you still suffer from the fan impulse of "shove as many references and iconic moments and displays of badassery as possible". For example: think of your favorite batman movie, literally any of them; chances are Batman fights for less than 20mins of that movie's runtime.

You should consider brainstorming a good story first and letting NW slip into it, instead of building up NW and trying to slip a story into him.

as a consolation: your NW seemed pretty talented in the physical department, even if he hammed it up verbally.

I wrote about 3-5 Zim scripts. One of them, which was my longest, had I think a total of 7 references to the show in my 60 page (I know!) script. 3 of them were nods to stuff that happened in the show. The rest where just characters I liked and wanted to see more of. The shorter, and better one contains maybe one or two. I don't remember off the top of my head. But my one goal with it is if you've never watched Zim or maybe didn't give a poo poo about Zim, you could still enjoy it.

Sure, it stars a main character from the show, but I tried to make it so you have all the information you need without any exposition.

Dib, the main character is sad and humiliated because he tries to find proof of ghosts/aliens, ect and fails every single time because he's overly arrogant, and tries way too hard. I just find the aspect of a hero character who plays the role of a hero only so he can be rewarded and praised for his efforts because he's so lonely and everyone hates him, really interesting. I assume he does give a poo poo about other people, but he's so desperate to be loved by anyone, he'll gently caress up everything just to get some proof it was him who saved the world, or caught the ghost/alien/ect.

His arc would've been that he can save the world, or the day or whatever without the need to be praised for it. (It would've been episodic, so none of the scripts really finish the arc)
The show never really developed his character, and that's fine because the show was never about that poo poo and was better for it....but it was something I personally wanted to explore. That could count as 'wish fulfillment' I suppose, but I hope it's a more honest and sincere reason than "I want to see Batman fight Deadpool!!!!". That and I find the episodes where he has to deal with low level paranormal poo poo hilarious. I love all things cryptozoology.

Although, in the new comics, Jhonen did actually give Dib a similar arc, so I think I might've been on the right track.

It's just one of those things I've always wanted to do since I was a lil kid. I just wanted to make a movie about Dib running around fighting monsters. Then I got the ability to make said movies, and wanted to try it. Never panned out. Actually got turned into something else. Similar concept. Original character. Probably will just do that. But hey, if I ever get the chance, I'm takin it.

I mentioned a few times in the thread, but to clarify. As a concept. I LOVE fan films. When I started out with my friends. We were basically making Shaw brothers, Tarantino and Coen fan flicks with our terrible scripts and acting. Being creative for creative sake is fantastic and cribbing from something and building your own little vision of it is very cool. Especially if you go down the Bootleg route of trying a newish spin on it. I have a load of respect for anyone willing to get out and make something. And am a little jealous of the guys making 20 hour long, multi-faceted stories. I would love a crew as dedicated as that and working for the joy of it no matter how rough it was. It's when you start spending real money on this poo poo and don't have a script as much as a laundry list.

Celtic Predator: Just go for it, make it because you want to scratch that creative itch you have. If you spent a hundred hours making something poo poo, but enjoyed that time and learned from it. Then you are doing better than like 90% of unpaid crews on shorts chasing a lovely credit.

My friend and I's short film for mass media class was VERY well received by our 11th grade cohorts in approximately 2005 (class size: 13):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLSza9rEX8I

No dialogue because we couldn't say any lines without laughing, and we could only edit on the school computers because we didn't have a camera or Mac (and only one person knew how to use it). But it's whatever the opposite of pretentious is, and it has a positive message about friendship.

Then all 3 of us moved to separate corners of the US and the cinematic dream died forever.

That clip of Vader vs. Batman was super cringeworthy, but it had absolutely 0 pretension about what it was, had good lighting (if I'm remembering the right clip), and was about as clever as "two dark brooding jerks fight in a room" could be.

This could have been incredible like that X-Men fan film someone posted earlier in the thread, but they tried too hard to be good without embracing how fun it could be. It almost owns at about a minute in when Bane gently pushes a door open and off screen "throws" someone into a room before shoving another person in. So close.
