I'd personally recommend anything by Urasawa Naoki. Though most of its still in manga form, Monster did get an anime.
I really wish 20th Century Boys would get an anime.

Yeah, I was actually cringing at the thought he'd get another revival as he was falling off the roof or something. The way it actually ended stretched my suspension of disbelief a little, but was better in terms of the story it was trying to tell with that essay he read at the end.
