The little chicken girl wants me to ease up!
He can't handle!
He cries like woman!

How will the Global War on Terror be viewed from a historical lens? Is it going to be an issue of locution? Will the wars, fought between wildly disparate cultures, societies, and people continue to be lumped together? Are the monikers of "The Long War" or "The Forgotten War" going to enter the lexicon when Afghanistan is brought up? Will potential future involvement in the "Middle East" solidify our understanding of the conflicts as one or serve as a bifurcation point between the previous and the potential soon-to-be?

I deployed twice to Afghanistan as a Marine. RC East circa 07 and RC West 08-09. Most of my MOS school buddies found themselves in Iraq while I stupidly found myself gleeful to deploy to Afghanistan. All ready at the age of 30 I am confronted with young people asking probing questions about the five W's. I never deployed to Iraq but found myself sending Amazon packages to my friends there from Afghanistan. A few were killed in Sadr City, a few blown the gently caress up but lived, a few sexually assaulted, and very few that wouldn't feel at home here.

Having spent interminable hours looking into the inky darkness out back, myriad issues regarding panic, and mostly understanding this is a comedy forum, what do you "gents" think our conflicts will be labelled as? Where do you go when you ask "why the gently caress?" or "are you loving kidding me?" for the thousandth time?

I don't know if this is some poo poo I should bring up in the chat for honest dialogue but I don't know how to access it.

It will be known as the 5th Freedom War of the United World of America, all other wars having been either lumped into freedom wars 1-4 or forgotten entirely.

Real talk in 50 years how people perceive the relationship between 9/11 and the wars of the last 15 years will be equivalent to how people today remember the relationship between "Remember the Maine" and the various interventions we conducted in Latin America for the next three decades following our invasion of Cuba

9/11 will be remembered as that time some Muslims bombed the White House or something and then we invaded Iran and Afpakijikistan

WOKE UP IN THE DESERT AGAIN
I always have an answer to "why the gently caress?" and "are you loving kidding me?". Just look at your deployment-buddies Facebook feeds. When the people who were loving there have nothing to take away from the experience beyond idolizing themselves and creating a "we were winning when I left" narrative, I have no reason to expect anything more from the mass of terrified pisspants who never had any skin in the game.

"Here's a picture of me patrolling in Al Anbar.. here's a picture of me drinking chai with some locals.. here's a picture of me playing with some Iraqi kids.. here's a picture of my dead buddies.. oh by the way WE ARE AT WAR WITH ISLAM AND WE MUST EXTERMINATE THEM ALL. TRUMP 2016 MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN"

oh. ok.

Fitting, except nobody remembers any of that. It'll be forever lumped in with Vietnam as a bad idea that had more and more bodies thrown at it until we got bored/better electric car batteries.

Smedley Butler was the grand old man of the Marine Corps and went House to House and Street to Street in Hue City next to Archibald Henderson Field. 'Rah?

So it's going to be a footnote spanning 14 years following a paragraph about the greatest special operations mission of all time. Pictures of a few bearded men wielding (allegedly) viagra and JDAMs on horses with Jingley Trucks playing Taps as they bump along IED potholes. And then we turn the page. Sounds about right.

Act of Valor was legitimately one of the worst movies I've seen in years. And I went in without high expectations. Just wanted to see bad dudes get lit up. But they couldn't even make that look decent.

the average dipshit is barely even aware of world war 2, the most apocalyptic conflict in human history not even a century gone. go ask joe blow to tell you even the basics of that and youll get a lot of blank looks and stammering retardation. in 50 years time the wars in iraq and afghanistan will only be a sidebar in history text books

Or World War I, the war that Americans only learn about so we can learn about Hitler and the word "doughboy." But I also don't think most Americans could actually explain what we're doing in any of the various countries that we acknowledge being in. These wars are being written as a sidebar.

Yeah I should've put "remember" in scare quotes because that's the point, no one remembers the Banana Wars, no one remembers the Spanish-American War, hell, most people probably have no idea what "Remember the Maine" is even in relation to beyond a vague memory from the 5 seconds a history teacher spent on it in some class once

As others have pointed out, given the fact that most people today barely even remember Pearl Harbor and how that led to the US's entry into the most cataclysmic and destructive war in human history, pretty sure in 50 years no one's going to remember 9/11 beyond vague memories in the vein of what I posted earlier.

ayup

and the people who claim to know what we're doing are usually the ones furthest removed, in places like the five sided wind tunnel, who have no actual understanding of what's going on

I know people who aren't even aware we've ever fought a war with Korea. That poo poo was a footnote between WW2 and Vietnam in the history books.

Probably true, but "Remember the Maine!" refers to something that had a far more massive impact on the US, as well as global politics. And yet I'd say 10/10 average Americans would have no clue what the gently caress it means.
