I ended up using a second email account for the 3rd Round. I couldn't find anywhere on the MWNL site that said I would get the codes automatically and I hate to miss out on free games.

The Golden Joystick store is offering a free copy of Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition for EU/UK!

I haven't attempted to claim a copy from the US (I already own the Steam release anyway) but I bet with a proxy you can do it. You probably own it already because who the hell doesn't but if you don't or if you want another, here you go! This is only valid until the 31st of March.

Anyone on the fence about trying this, be advised: it actually, surprisingly, owns. The voice talent and script are on point and there are even a few actual puzzles. The art style is similar (but imo superior) to Telltale's recent offings.

The originals are still awful but this reboot is solid, and Chapters 2 and 3 are even better than 1. Try it out.

Casual googling shows me a lot of hearsay and :tinfoil: speculation, and even if money were stolen it were stolen from a theoretical Homestuck game, so I really don't feel bad at all for enjoying/buying it.

The Spring RTS Engine is a free, 3D engine for people to make RTS games in. Most notably, there are a couple of different complete recreations of Total Annihilation, if Planetary Annihilation and Supcom don't strike your fancy and you just want the complete original game in a 3D engine with physics, terrain deformation and a modern RTS interface and AI. There are other games in the Spring engine available for free other than Total Annihilation, but I can thoroughly recommend Balanced Annihilation for hours of multiplayer fun with your friends. The game comes with a multiplayer lobby with ranking system and hosted servers which last I played still had a community. Overall, would recommend.

Edit: Spring itself was always free, but I'm putting it in this thread for a free version of 'I can't believe it's not Total Annihilation'

The series that holds up best is probably the quest for glory series, and even that one is pockmarked with dead man walking scenarios and crap. Fortunately, by QFG3, the Coles generally had their act together, and I still maintain that QFG4 is the best adventure game of the entire 90s as long as you can set up an emulation scheme that eliminates the bugs.

Even at the time, Sierra game design was laughably terrible compared to INFOCOM. The only thing they had going for them was "pretty graphics".

I remember QFG1 came on something like ten 3.5" floppies. Took forever to install that mother.

On topic, most INFOCOM games can be played for free these days.

Old ARPG game with interesting spell casting and great particles / line of sight for its day NOX is free on Origin.

One of my favorite games from yesteryear. No idea how well this one runs (the GoG version has obviously been updated to run on modern systems) so hopefully it works alright.

Back in the day the multiplayer used to be an amazing shitshow of chaos and it was FUN for it. So loving crazy with particles flying everywhere and warriors bullrushing you through doors and just all around in general loving nonsense happening.

Riot Bimbo

NOX is excellent. To me, it aspired to take the ARPG formula and do something interesting with it. It's a world that's not built around grinding for the best loot. Multiplayer was either roleplaying or skill-based objective stuff. Co-op was relegated to a module called Nox Quest which had little merit to it.

The campaign is slightly to majorly different for every class, there are tons of hidden areas and the atmosphere is top notch. I'd say it's better than D2/D1 as a single player experience.

NOX competitive multiplayer was one of those games that allow you to choose your own spells and do semi-creative things with them, so naturally it ended up with everyone running around at a thousand miles an hour making GBS threads instant room-clearing death lighting at all times. It was a special kind of hosed up.
