Some of the real DLC is fantastic though, and I highly recommend both A Criminal Past which is all-around awesome and System Rift which is solid.

Be aware that even though DLCs for DEMD are good, they're organized in a bad way. A Criminal Past is fine, it's cool and completely standalone adventure. But two other DLCs are very obviously chapters cut out from the main game - they literally happen in between main story events, and you still play them as separate campaigns. It may not sound like a huge issue, but in this interconnected game it feels very wrong to jump in a middle of it bringing nothing from hour main playthrough, carrying nothing back and struggling to remember what was the situation at this point of the story. These standalone chapters feel off. So there's a good argument for playing without DLCs, and if you want a DLC you should get A Criminal Past which doesn't suffer from this - even though for some reason it stil happens during the maon campaign, but it's a long flashback about prior events not connected to main story directly.
