 The Spring RTS Engine is a free, 3D engine for people to make RTS games in. Most notably, there are a couple of different complete recreations of Total Annihilation, if Planetary Annihilation and Supcom don't strike your fancy and you just want the complete original game in a 3D engine with physics, terrain deformation and a modern RTS interface and AI. There are other games in the Spring engine available for free other than Total Annihilation, but I can thoroughly recommend Balanced Annihilation for hours of multiplayer fun with your friends. The game comes with a multiplayer lobby with ranking system and hosted servers which last I played still had a community. Overall, would recommend.

Edit: Spring itself was always free, but I'm putting it in this thread for a free version of 'I can't believe it's not Total Annihilation'
