Do you hate sodas? Think Hillary Clinton isn't close enough to Wall Street? Feel that Donald Trump is just too poor to deserve your vote? Boy, do I have a candidate for you!

Michael Bloomberg is planning an independent presidential run if Trump/Cruz and Bernie Sanders are nominated, or even if he considers Hillary Clinton weakened by the primary. What better way to stump Trump than to run as an independent that would mostly take votes away from the Democratic candidate? As someone who thinks that the U.S. should just dispense with voting and elect whoever is highest on the Forbes billionaires list that wants to be president at the time, I can't wait!

If this happens, does the left put Biden in as an independent to counterbalance Bloomberg?

He threatens to do this every four years or so and never does anything about it.

If he's serious this time he needs to get out in the storm today and start collecting signatures for ballot access because he's got a steep hill to climb and there's not a lot of time left.

Hereby it is manifest that during the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war; and such a war as is of every man against every man.

The article claims he'll make up his mind in early March. For the record, the first filing deadline is late April, but some of those early filing rules are ludicrously strict (especially TX in early May).

Didn't some states already close their primary ballots for candidates? Or does that affect only Rep/Dem presidential candidates?

Seems like if he ran it's to late to even bother. People already watched the circus debates. we had for the past few months so unless he jumps in offering a new level of crazy no one might bat an eye to him.

We're just talking general election ballot access, not GOP/Dem primary and caucus ballots access which (most) are already too late to bother getting involved with.

What reasons are there to suggest that Bloomberg would play spoiler to Sanders instead of playing spoiler to Trump?

Wouldn't Bloomberg appeal to establishment republicans who don't like Trump but might hold their nose to vote against the socialist?

Because the right hates him so much they've literally had the NRA running ads LONG before this saying "BLOOMBERG ISN'T RUNNING FOR ANYTHING...BUT WHAT IS THAT drat JEW UP TO??? STOP BLOOMBERG GIVE US MONEY!!!!" While the left mainly hates him for just being a generic scumbag.

At least in Russia the oligarchs strike a deal with a powerful head of state (who supposedly is a secret oligarch), now we might have two in a race for president against the guy running against wealth inequality who is "too extreme" - a definite sign of the times. This poo poo is slipping away.

In the Joementum-described "Earth 2" where Sanders vs. Trump is a thing (it's not going to be a thing), Bloomberg would enter the race polling 20% and probably climb to 40% pretty quickly, Trump would have a lock on 200 EVs but pretty much zero chance of anything past that and Bernie would struggle to break 50.

Trump can't win the nomination but a fundamentally unlikeable (outside NY) globalist anti-2nd amendment but "fiscally conservative" 3rd party candidate "would quickly poll at 40%" in a 3 person general. The delusions are getting so absurd I'm not sure who's trolling anymore.

I'm hugely bearish on Trump, maybe 2nd to Joementum on the forums, but if he increasingly looks like the nominee I expect Hillary's argument to shift to beating Trump at all costs. That line of attack is much better than her 2008 version of the same thing because Candidate Bernie is no Candidate Obama and it will take her off the current half assed attack path that she's terrible at. At any rate the SEC primary is far worse to Bernie than Iowa/NH is, almost as bad as it is for all the GOPe's.

As for Bloomberg, he starts with the ~1/4 to 1/3 of the GOP that will cross over from a Trump nom given an acceptable candidate and about the same number of Dems that cross from a Bernie nom, mostly in the south. Then he adds a billion dollars + anti-Trump superPAC money. If you think that gets him as far as Jeb, maybe. On the other hand it's two billion dollars in ads and he's a better campaigner than Jeb (this is admittedly a very low bar). He can buy higher national numbers and probably poll leads in 280 EVs for a month or two. The main question is if he can sustain it for six months which is at least plausible in the world where the other two options are that abhorrent to that many people. This whole paragraph doesn't matter because it's not going to be how it works out, but it's what he's thinking right now and the thread is named after him so whatevs.

Awfully nice of the billionaires to freak out and preemptively redistribute all their wealth to needy ad agencies in the face of the looming Sanders presidency.

Bloomberg would just be joke candidate #328183 in this cycle.
