Anyone else watching Halperin and Heilemann's new project? Its basically a behind the scenes look at campaigns and actually attempts to capture the candidates as actual human beings. The idea is to do one episode a week until election day, covering the madness on the trail as it happens. Its wafer thin on policy (a single reference to Cruz being "very conservative", Bernie's talk of Wall Street), but rather entertaining. I'd throw it over in TVIV but I think this is a better home for the thread. Episode 1 covered Iowa with a focus on Cruz and Sanders, and tonight's episode tracked the four republican establishment candidates as they wade through New Hampshire.

Sounds like something I'd love, so I'll check it out. I'm just surprised they're able to do it while the campaigns are still going on, you'd think they'd still be tightly guarding anything interesting.

I just watched the first episode and it's great. Minimalist with the narration and sound bites, it gives you just enough to follow all the different narratives the media and candidates are making. It's also visually interesting just by virtue of being backstage, seeing rallies from unusual angles, and not using tripods. Different from how the candidates are usually presented. Two more points in its favor: it's very current, talking about stuff that happened just a couple weeks ago, and it's by the With All Due Respect guys.

I watched the second episode. It's about the GOP establishment logjammers in New Hampshire. The Showrunners reached the same conclusion I did, that every establishment person sees NH as their first step on the road to the White House. Even if the cameras and knowledge of who Mark and John are prevent real 100% candidness, it definitely feels a lot more real than you get from normal interviews. Like the part where Jeb is hurriedly walking by and Mark asks "how's the campaign going?" and Jeb says "it's great. I can't spin this early in the morning." I already feel like I know all the candidates they've featured a little bit better. ... except for Rubio.

i only saw the second ep, but it was pretty good. does seem a bit fluffy and nice to each candidate though

Gamechange was p. fluffy too, letting McCain look like just a confused old man instead of the bitter hateful turd he actually is. If you want a neat look behind the scenes this is good, and I like it for that, if you want hard hitting, yea, not the place for it.

These guys have a corner of the market that's for people that are already engaged. Who gives a gently caress if it's fluffy when their core market is armchair pundits like the posters on this board... which this guy either doesn't get or he really, really hates one of them (probably Halperin, he's clearly a bit of a dick) http://www.salon.com/2016/01/24/fear_and_loafing_on_the_campaign_trail_showtimes_the_circus_cops_out_with_cynical_pundit_porn/ I had to scroll past "Bernie Sanders is the Next Ronald Reagan" to dig this back up, Jesus loving Christ Salon

Game Change and Double Down are GREAT if you want character portraits of the candidates. The Circus feels very much in that style. Hell they managed to soften Ted Cruz, no small feat. Interesting that the only candidate to come off looking worse is Marco Rubio, who appeared totally disengaged and fake. Also, gently caress that Salon article. I'm a progressive and spent a bit of time working on a campaign, but there's nothing that makes me wince more than Salon. The clickbaity headlines, the straw man arguments, the weirdly righteous tone... ugh.

Yea just to be clear I love Game Change and Double Down and The Circus, just agreeing that it's their usual fluffy style rather than some big "WE'RE GONNA DIG INTO THE SHADOWS" bullshit. Shock of shocks, the dudes who mainly focus on character profiles rather than getting into the dirt are the ones who get to keep coming on campaign buses and poo poo. Totally agree that Marco looked terrible in his profile, even Cruz at least had a couple corny jokes that made me smile, Marco just kept up his candidate mask the whole time and it really showed. poo poo I even felt bad for Jeb with a couple of his 'god drat man he's TRYING' kinda moments.

Three things to Note: 1) Ted Cruz actually comes off like a human being. I did think the "moment" with his father was a bit harder to swallow, knowing that he's called Obama a Marxist and all sorts of other insanities. 2) Man, Rubio does not come off well in these. At all. Even when he does a bit with his kids and wife, he's still so stilted and artificial. I know we all called Mitt Romney a stiff, but he shows more charisma than Marco. 3) The Clinton campaign must've really blue-balled them. No quick interviews with Hillary or any surrogates, just a quick shot of one phone bank.

Interesting to see the Hillary campaign continue to blueball the show's coverage. Hillary and Bill did all sorts of fun things in Vegas while campaigning - rallys in the hispanic part of town, visiting with casino workers at 3 am - that you would think make excellent fodder for Halperin and Heilemann to hype up.

Tonight's episode was fantastic, juxtaposing Nancy Reagan's words with the current state of affairs. And the last section with Trump's words overlaid with the video of bloodied protestors and cops... devastating.

I'm still wondering if the lack of Hillary focus is because they can't gain access or if they want to capture Sanders' campaign before she (presumably) wins the primary.

In addition to seeing Trump as an electoral liability and an unreliable conservative on key issues you have to think that some of them are realizing that after Trump it might not be possible to keep blue collar whites reliably voting for low-wage low-tax policies anymore.
