I name a lot of my Xcom soldiers after people I actually know so that probably adds a lot of attachment.

Any day now.

It is true that everyone's quippy sarcasm kinda all blended together. I didn't hate the characters or anything, but they were so thin that it kinda feels like they may as well have done random squaddies again and saved their writing/VA budget for the rest of the plot.

I hope they go back to random disposable-until-you-love-them soldiers if/when XCOM3 comes out.

Well, you've gotta give them a name and then make them look like their name and then put them in the library.

Every time Dale Gribble shows up, I'll think of his successful career as a sniper. Margaret Schroeder? No better medic in the field.

And who could forget: Hans Panzerfaust, the German robot.

I felt this way in firaxcom 1 vanilla, but with training roulette in 1 and the character editor in 2, I definitely felt like they stood out as individuals more. I still remember the ranger I took to endgame on my first playthrough was Robert Muldoon and his trusty shotgun Clever Girl.

Oh and my army of predator rejects chomping on big old cigars. Those guys were great.

Yeah I tend to start to get more familiar with my A-squad at least by the endgame, although I wouldn't be able to tell you any of their names after like a week of not playing. I think this is just one of those things that different people respond to differently; some people lean into the fiction and like to build stories around their squad while others can't suspend their disbelief and have trouble seeing them as anything other than a collection of randomly shuffled costume parts. I tend to remember them more based on whatever unique abilities they might have rolled or been granted by a special piece of equipment - I tend to like to vary my builds rather than having all my heavies or whoever using the exact same skill picks, so that can make them a bit more individually distinct even if it's not particularly optimal (snipers in 1 were a bit of an exception because like, as neat as mobile sniper sounds on paper, squadsight was just such an overwhelmingly obvious pick that it kind of dictated the whole build for every sniper).

I whipped up elaborate stories (both backstories and ongoing narratives based on what happened in the campaign) for my squaddies in XCOM2 and I thought Chimera Squad's agents were fine and enjoyed their dialogue and banter.

They're all decent to a degree but Torque, Verge, and Axiom were genuinely entertaining in distinct ways and I would genuinely like to see more of them moving forward, however uncertain the timetable for "forward" is.

Runa
Feb 13, 2011

Torque's basically just a second-generation immigrant who fell into the conservative hole and started shittalking naturalized immigrants, except instead of a human ethnicity she's a snake. If you come from a family of nonwhite immigrants you probably can identify a relative like that.

Verge is a giant dork who's sincere and enthusiastic about food he can't eat.

Axiom is... okay he's basically Wrex with the serial numbers filed off.

Also Blueblood might be a cop cop but he's the platonic ideal of the Gunslinger-build Sharpshooter and he isn't burdened by carrying around a vestigal sniper rifle. The guy's a one-man army about on par with some the most broken set of mod perks you can find on the steam workshop.

I didn't know there was a thread and wouldn't read it if it exists

I do thinks Nick Mullen is a very funny guy and the show was/is very funny in a broad comedy type of way that either no longer exists as a genre, or has moved so far right as to not be observable as comedy and instead more as a political act

I think it's good writing personally but I have low standards and love the character of MD. His whole thing is being out of his element. He most likely thought he signed up for Doctors without Borders but accidentally joined a group of Mercenaries instead. Whenever he gets a kill it is such a surprise that it improves everyone's morale.

I think JA3 is a very good game and in an XCOM 3-less world, I am grateful for its existence. I don't think the game is meant to be a writing/story forward type product. It doesn't bother me

I think it's one of the better TBS games I've played in the last few years.

I do agree directionally with what I think Dorkopotamis meant that Chimera Squad felt like I was playing a weird total conversion based on someone's OC DO NOT STEAL xcom extended universe fanfic characters. Like, it was a jarring tonal shift from the rest of xcom and felt like a Saturday Morning Cartoon written by someone who had watched some xcom 2 cutscenes on youtube, I guess? It just had a vibe that immediately and abrasively turned me away from it, unironically it was the exact same way I felt when I bought X-Com: Enforcer sight unseen as a kid and excitedly rushed home only to find out after installing it that it wasn't actually a new x-com game, but at least I only paid 60 cents or something for Chimera Squad.

I bought all the 'Sparks are underpowered' bullshit and didn't bother building one for my second playthrough until I'd gotten to plasma and was noticing my A and B teams were often down with tiredness/injury at the same time, a problem I didn't have as much on game 1 when I had an early Spark. I guess just having a tireless robot you can plug into any squad helps give everyone a bit more of a breather.

Also I didn't use the training center at all in my first playthrough but Sparks like Specialists really benefit from being able to just buy both trees, so despite being a late addition I felt like Spark-Julian (initially nicknamed Lancelot but I changed that to Mordred) really pulled his weight.

On the topic of memorable randos, I still remember Rudi Schultz, my one man alien base clearing badass from my first win of 90s XCOM. I also remember Gunter Meyer, his replacement in Terror From The Deep who was probably even more badass given that game's higher difficulty, but he was never quite as cool.

When the chips are down and everyone has turned their back on you, you'll always have someone reliable in your corner: a spark. With weapon upgrades and veterancy, they're really good, stacking up well against most squadies unless you really start to factor in implants, training, bonds... etc.

Their potency cap is lower than most squadies, but they can't let you down and in commander/veteran they can really take a punishing like squadies can't. They're powerful and consistent and I always find myself wanting to bring one on a mission

I recognize they're probably less good at higher levels of difficulty, but the game requires stricter playstyles, generally, at higher difficulty

People said that a bunch, but I found her to more shift from damage to comical levels of cc over a run. She absolutely contributed solidly all game for me and I never felt disappointed rolling her.

Combine her with the specialists also comical cc and you could lock down entire maps indefinitely.

E: Also, sparks were less bad units and more just... disappointing. Something about all their animations and stuff just felt anemic at all times, be it punching or using their bit as a bomb. They just weren't satisfying to use, and drew comparisons to mech troopers which were incredibly satisfying to use, at all times.

I thought Chimera Squad was an awesome surprise and a great deal, and something I really don't want XCOM to keep doing in the slightest. For one, I do think the writing was terrible and it's no real surprise that they went and did a Marvel game right afterwards because, yeah, that fits. Then there's the fact that the actual combat just felt repetitive after a while with little room for the experimentation the mainline games encourage. Like, I pretty much never moved my mans because all I wanted to do was have everyone shooting/using abilities. A neat little spinoff and testing ground that I hope remains nothing more.

I recently finished Chimera Squad, and really liked it. I feel it's only one expansion/DLC/mod from being a great game.

Like, it's a game about being cops, how don't you have interrogation scenes? Make you have to capture a enemy alive, and you can choose which of your guys is the good cop and bad cop (Torque always wants to be the bad cop).

But I agree with some of this threads complaints, it needs more enemy types, less quips, more mission variance, more sectoid Alex Jones and to actually let me use my mechs without having to lose someone first.

For the price and length it was though, it was a surprisingly good and fun game, and a great place to experiment instead of XCOM 3.

People focus on the punching, but everything about them feels really floaty and not in touch. The ability where the spark detonate its bit as a portable grenade? Doesn't do cover damage, doesn't really have a graphical effect, just "boop" chip damage in an area. You can probably still hear all the machinery noises from a mech trooper stomping around, but even just moving a spark doesn't feel like a big giant robot man. And their gun sounds downright dinky when compared to the big old charge and boom mech troopers used to have. Heck, do their guns even get a different sound effect from normal troopers?
