Apparently there is now a chance that a newly triggered pod will take a shot, but I'm pretty sure that's only for the first concealment overwatch. It's also a change that didn't make it into this review build.

There is a chance they will take a shot if one of the enemies in range is flanked/out of cover when the pod triggers

Getting the Advanced Warfare Center early rules because of the crazy bonuses you can get. Already have a concealment medic, a guardian sniper (who is levels up high enough that she also has killzone), and a cannon grenadier who has what I think is a high-level sniper ability? If he kills an enemy using the ability he gets his action points back. I'll have to look at it when I get home from work.

Just unlocked tracer rounds (straight on to my long-range sniper, +10% aim!), gas grenades, and I'm developing an experimental armor and I have no idea what that will end up being because I never saw beagle or jams do that research while streaming.

Goddamn this game rules.

I think it's less that they have more health and more that they aren't afraid of mixing up pods with a variety of units. In EU you generally had to fight Sectoids OR Thin Men OR Mutons unless you messed up and activated several pods at once. Now every pod has at least a Advent Leader or a Sectoids accompanying what would normally just be two 3-health dudes. Even more so later, when you can get a leader, a muton, and a snake all in the same pod

I had a pod of 1 viper and 2 sectoids on the landed UFO mission I did before work.

Luckily they were bunched up and I was in concealment flanking them so a grenade plus some overwatch killed them all before they could do anything. :v:

The initial vest is one like in EU where it trades an item slot for more health. After that you will get predator armor, which is proper armor and researching it then buying it will put it onto the entire team. From there you can start making exo suits and the like for more diverging armor choices

There is an Experimental Armor project as well. I have nano vests and predator armor but I'm also like 5 research days from unlocking my first experimental armor so I guess I'll see what that is.

Unfortunately I am also at work so I won't get to run those days to find out until I get home. :(

"Rescue 6/13 civilians that are mixed in with 10 enemies" is worse than generic_escort_mission bullshit, ugh.

They really aren't too bad.

Move forward as quickly as you can stay safe and whenever possible overwatching at least half your squad. If you have a concealment ranger (or any other character who can stay concealed via random skill from the AWC) move them up aggressively while staying in cover+concealment.

Early on in the mission and any time a pod is up do not try to rescue civilians unless they are imminent danger. If you do have to do this, make sure you have at least two squad members nearby on overwatch so that if the civilian turns out to be a Faceless you'll kill it before it can do much harm. As soon as you can do the ADVENT Trooper autopsy to get the little reveal grenades get those, they are very useful on these missions as they will reveal any Faceless, so pop those on any "groups" of civilians (the sensors have a really wide radius so you can usually get multiple civilians in the detection radius at once)

The other thing to keep in mind is if you're able to take out a few of the enemy squads quickly early on in the mission before many civilians have died, don't worry about saving civilians, just keep mopping up. Once you kill the last pod of enemies, and remaining unrevealed Faceless will immediately reveal themselves and charge toward your group.

I found its better to not metal gear solid the maps by sneaking to the objective. You will find yourself activating 3 pods at the same time.

The only exception to this I've found so far is sneaking around the first Blacksite mission so I didn't have to deal with any of the turrets. I did have to pop two pods at once for my first fight on the map, but I knew they were there and was able to plan my ambush so that the enemies I couldn't kill on the initial ambush were too far out of range to be any real danger (most of my squad was in full cover). Not needing to deal with the turrets allowed me to get a surprise attack on the Muton, which would otherwise have been a fairly rough bit of combat so early in the game.

RBA Starblade posted:

I just missed my first 95% chance to hit. :xcom:
Yep, I've had one of those so far. On the other hand I've had my sharpshooter with Lightning hands nail several ~30% shots. Lesson: if you can't hit anything else with Lightning Hands, it can sometimes be worth taking even low percentage shots if it will result in a kill-on-hit since you're not using an action to do it.

Kenshin

Flashbangs are great and have kept me from getting hit when I couldn't kill pods via overwatch. I highly recommend doing 1xFlash 1xFrag early game on your grenadier(s).

So is it confirmed that Veteran cheats in your favor like the 2nd difficulty in XCOM?

I was having a rough time with Commander level, but smashing poo poo up flawlessly in Veteran. Things like shaving a hp off advent troopers so they only have 3 and grenades autokill them makes a big difference!

I doubt it cheats in your favor, that health difference is huge since it's so much easier to down the stock troopers.

The other part is that this game seems to ramp up difficulty as you go through the campaign a lot better than XCOM did. I'm midway through on Veteran (just got magnetic weapons & predator armor) and if I didn't have the upgrades I've got I'd be in big trouble, and I'm not seeing any 3-health troopers anymore. XCOM was often just a wall of difficulty from the beginning.
