I guess spider suits need another look heh.

The mobility from spider suits is amazing, and even though they don't have as much armor/hp as the war suits, I think for general purpose use they are better.

If you somehow get four to six soldiers kidnapped you should get to do a special story mission where they steal some guns and bust out of jail on their own.

There was some mod I tried a year or two back that had a jail break mission for times like that. It was a hard as hell mission, but it was nice to get everyone back at once. If you didn't have enough captured soldiers it would toss random soldiers/engineers/scientists in there that you could rescue and recruit as well.

Did I gently caress up by doing a resistance ring first?

The biggest reason to do GTS first is to get the fifth soldier in time for the terror mission. If you can handle the terror mission with just 4 soldiers you're better off long term with the Ring.

Played through it a couple of times. It was fun, but yeah I play WotC regularly still, and not Chimera Squad. For :10bux: it was a great deal, and it looks like it's only $7 right now on Steam.

There are a couple of mods that let you recruit everyone, but they aren't going to level if you're not bringing them.

Huh, hundreds of hours and I never saw this behavior before. Lost sitrep on a supply mission of some sort and I was in concealment watching as a group of lost attacked Advent. Advent refused to fire on them and just hopped back and forth over some barriers while the lost smacked at them. I felt like it was cheating to let the lost kill `em, so I started combat after a five rounds or so .

If you are concealed and have vision of both the Lost and the Advent, they will activate and attack each other. Usually the Advent actually respond, but maybe their AI bugged out because it knew you were nearby and didn't want to expose the flank to you?

Play X-COM 1 with the Enemy Within DLC (no need to do a vanilla run first; the content is integrated nicely alongside the base campaign)

EW makes the base defense mission significantly more difficult, and although meld makes things a lot easier if you know what you're doing with it, it might be better to start with the base game. EW is integrated really well though, definitely a lot better than the mis-named 'integrate DLC' option in Xcom2

Battletech is a great game, and there are all sorts of mods to tweak it if you want. I use a couple of small mods that add additional mechs without changing much about the gameplay, but there are a couple of big ones that dramatically change the way it works.

With Xcom2 I often lose someone in the first half dozen missions, but after that it's very rare. I had a recent game where Jane Kelly (using the mod that force spawns her) died during Gatecrasher, and then I didn't lose anyone else for the rest of it.

Also I don't think you can evacuate from the Blacksite; it's a mission where the Evac zone is placed *for* you, and only after you achieve the objective.

From what I remember you can call in an evac on that mission up to the point of grabbing the vial. There are only a couple of missions where you truly can't evac, and it's the hostage rescue where you have to hold out against waves of respawns, and the ones where the spawn is already preplaced. The black site doesn't have a preplaced evac until you grab the vial.

E: or maybe it's the forge that doesn't have the preplaced? If so, ignore everything I just wrote.

Phoenix Point is original xcom mechanics with new xcom squad sizes, and a unique aiming system.

Same old inventory bullshit, same getting sniped from the fog, but with fewer rookies to soak damage, same convoluted tech system, same base management mess where you try to decide where to put them around the globe, and production is basically identical original xcom.

Apoc is probably my favorite of the 3 older games, but it 100% has to be played in realtime, turns/TUs don't work at all with a bunch of the units and weapons.

I'd love a new version of it, which Chimera Squad kind of felt like it was the proof of concept for.

There is one that I don't remember the name for that puts a statline above your soldiers, so you can see who your 100 aim gods are, and who the 65 aim chumps are.

I always used to do the classic mode so you had to do the nest mission to spawn them, but at some point I just decided to do the integrated one and keep them parked at facilities until I was ready for them. Nest is too hard of a mission for how early it spawns, and too easy later to bother with.

This is all good advice - I'll probably start with vanilla or lightly modded WotC and try Long War if the ennui of Summer makes me want something longer and more punishing.

Pretty much only the two previously listed mods of evac all and the gotcha one are mandatory for quality of life reasons. You might want to try mechatronic warfare to make your robots more fun, but I wouldn't really mod it more than that.

Mechanically and in terms of UI/quality of life, XCOM2 is superior to XCOM1 and I love playing it for that reason. The stealth stuff is fun too.

But narratively and flavor wise, XCOM1 is just so much more fun. Learning about the aliens, capturing them, shooting down and reverse engineering UFO's and general tech... it's wonderful.

Is there a mod that just uses XCOM2's UI and QoL changes pasted over XCOM1?

I agree completely about the UI improvements in xcom2, which is why it's so hard to go back to xcom1. It would be pretty fun to try a mod that combines the two into xcom1 story with xcom2 QoL.
