Any word on whether Shivs or MECs will be returning (or some equivalent)?

Neither in the base game. Well, fully robotic MECs are as enemies. And you can hack them in mission to control them.

One will almost certainly be returning in the announced DLC 'Shen's Last Gift', especially since MEC autopsy says they're based off of work he was doing before he died and the DLC is explicitly adding another class.

My bet would be MECs or some kind of nu-MEC class, perhaps something more 'Iron Man' than 'Lifter Exosuit'.

Personally really hoping for androids though.

I honestly don't see what the bid deal is with Phantom. It honestly seems pretty lovely and I'm definitely taking Blademaster on all my dudes.

The later skill that lets you activate concealment at will 1/mission I see in a much better light because that seems to open up a lot of tactical options. But concealment that lasts when the rest of your team un-conceals seems pointless and mostly seems to make you fight at a man down. :effort:

Like concealment is gamebreaking good to get you out of tight situations. But Phantom means the second you get into one it becomes useless.

So something I just learned, enemies don't get aim bonuses for being close to your dudes. Which might explain some of the sectoid/advent trooper behavior where they don't shoot even when they're up your rear end sometimes, their aim is abysmal enough to override that flank shot.

So something cool about weapon mods is they stay on a soldier's weapon even as you move up tiers. So dont be afraid to us them early because you want to save them for tier 2/3 weapons.

Not really?

Blademaster is what allows a sword ranger to work and synergizes amazingly with everything about it. Blade Rangers also don't need run and gun because of the sword, while conceal rangers definitely want run and gun instead of conceal because their sword is poo poo.

It makes sword rangers better scouts than conceal rangers if you build like that too since you can pop it any time, even between packs, while conceal rangers are stuck doing gently caress all early on or losing scouting later.

I honestly think all blade skills plus conceal over rng is the best build for Rangers. Maybe with Rapid Fire over Reaper if the rest of your squad lacks single target damage (Answer to that is always an aim pumped chain gun Grenadier for me though).

Uh, no they aren't. At least later on they're amazing and necessary when you have a ton of armor to shred off.

Chain Gun sounds bad but its basically a dedicated 'kill Sectopod/MEC/Andromedon/Gatekeeper'' button since they have gently caress all defense and your second shot benefits from shredding the armor with your first. You can also get up to +25 aim between tracer rounds and a superior scope which is great.

High rank grenadiers can rain down more death and destruction in a single turn than any other class in the game thanks to Salvo and Volatile mixture as well. When Im at squad 6 I run with one of each class and two grenadiers because destroying cover and armor is so important. There are two plot skulljackings. To just slam into regular Advent you need to research Skullmining at the proving grounds. It'll pop up as another icon and also give the skull jack +25 tech power.

You can skullmine and skulljack in the same mission. Skullmining just goves intel and insta-kills with 70% hit rate. You only ever get to use skulljacking on an Advent officer and a Codex once.

Both Rangers got the 50% chance to trigger a second overwatch if the first hits.

Grenadier 1 (explosive spec) got Covering fire. Grenadier 2 got Lightning reflexes.

Sharpshooter got something that doesn't work with pistols.

No one got anything really cool or gamechanging. And I'm sad Psi Ops don't get the extra perk.

Battle Rage just gives them an extra action point to use in combat, which just lets them use two moves before attacking.

They're weird because they normally can't melee at the end of a dash, and need the buff to actually let them do something similar. You can test it all when you mind control one.

Second overwatch shot for a Ranger can pay dividends in an overwatch trap around corners. Also some potential there to try a Rifle instead of Shotgun.

A grenadier with the overwatch no-proc ability would be great as an alternative to moving into position to break overwatch with a well placed grenade, especially before you get all the range upgrades.

Specialist with Hail seems pretty awesome. Sure it won't do as much damage as it would for the Grenadier and you lose out on the shred synergy but the uses are still plenty and can do good things to kill several units at once or tear down multiple non-armored enemies.

Nah, the Grenadier actually got no-poo poo Lightning Reflexes from EW's Assault tree with triggering all overwatch and automatically dodging one overwatch per turn.

And I think I mistyped the Specialist one, they got the shot that hits 100% of the time but costs 3 ammo which is... rarely useful with no riders like Shred or Holo-targetting.

Admittedly the overwatching from my Rangers has been the most useful, but not really gamechanging in any way. Not like say getting RnG on a Grenadier, or Serial on a non-Sharpshooter.
