Great game so far, my man Zackarie Attacke is getting the job done. Seems a bit harder than the last one, or it just drops you in the thick of it faster before you have the cooler stuff. Panicking rookies galore.

Question, are civilians on the map that aren't in the objectives of any use? Can you rescue them or anything? I saw a few civilians off to the side once in either the second or third mission, died, played it again and won but didn't run into any civilians.

Also in the first VIP escort mission, I notice "bad" civilians, some scientisty guy with a red circle around him who keeps walking away when I go near them. Should I kill them? (Assuming they might do bad stuff)

Now can someone answer my actual question - is there anything in this game you couldn't do with a ps4 controller?

It would be fine on consoles, sure. And in an interview recently they said the ol' vague "but we'd like it to be played by as many people as possible, naturally" or something like that, so who knows it mind end up getting ported at some point. But for now it's a PC game.

So I'm about to start playing through XCOM: Enemy Unknown. This game looks cool, but I can't justify buying 2 at 60 bucks when I've only put like 2 hours into the first one. I also hear the modding scene is decent. Are there any QoL mods I should grab? Or mods in general? The only real thing that kind of bugged me if I'm even remembering correctly is that I could run out of time, which I'm not a huge fan of (I like my tactics like FF tactics, though I acknowledge that people are gonna permanently die horribly)

I'd say you don't need any QoL mods, the game is great as is. It's doable on the first try, at least on normal difficulty.

Loving the game, man is it intense. It's roughing me up more than the last one, pretty tough. I'm around April 18th 2035 at the moment, haven't had much breathing room to buy more than a few recruits, and things to get more for free haven't been popping up much.

I only have 9 soldiers at the moment, two injured, five are rookies. 11 dead so far. I have 31 supplies, income of 115. Only big things I've bought are the Guerrilla school to get a bigger squad recently and the proving ground for the skulljack mission (had to run from the first one of those situations). Still 0 armor for everybody, all starting weapons etc.

Any advice on the money management side, and how many soldiers you think you need to have around?

You can recruit new ones instantly, so as many as you need to field a full squad. Having 10 or so for the eventual base defense isn't the worst thing, though.

Edit: Also, at some point doubling up on classes so you can always field a decent team is of course going to be the thing to do, but it doesn't seem like you're anywhere close to that yet.

I only have enough supplies to buy one rookie at the moment, so just feels like one tough month could destroy me, if I spent too much of my income on something fancy etc.

Maybe always, actually.

Thanks, good call, that could help in a pinch. I've got 222 intel, haven't bought much with it, though I know you need to keep some to contact new rebel groups etc.

Specialists can hack from range, so any hack objective is as simple as blowing the wall in front of the objective open and having your specialist hack from 8 miles away before cleaning up the enemies.

Just for the record, un-upgraded specialists for me have failed hacking all of the time so far. The hacking is not very enticing when the success rate is so low.

Also, on a mission where you had to get to a laptop and hit the hack button on it, my specialist wasn't able to select that from far away, only could select a couple tower thingies. Had to have a soldier go into the room manually and stand on the tile with the green star on it (which triggered respawns etc).

You can get rid of turrets instantly by nading the floor they're on; they'll fall through and die immediately. Three pods close together like that is a dream because it means your explosives get to do massive amounts of work and you can flashbang like 5 guys at once.

Seriously, I've won timed missions with half my squad dead because a dude blundered through a spotting square I couldn't see and tripping 3 pods at once at the end of my turn so they all got a free round on me. None of these missions are actually unwinnable if you make the right moves and bring the right stuff, and if they look completely unwinnable, bug the gently caress out. Losing missions that aren't "win this mission or the avatar project completes" is not the end of the world and "negative" council reports mean basically nothing in XCOM 2.

You literally cannot fail the basic "finish the objective" hack on objectives, no matter how poo poo your hacking stat is. You can fail the additional things but the "complete the objective" hack will always succeed.

As for your anecdote, sometimes the line of sight is a little weird and you might need to move your specialist to a different angle for them to be able to see the objective, but you can 100% definitely hack every hackable objective from range with a gremlin.

I know you can't fail the objective hacks, those being displayed as 100%. Any other hacking I've failed every time, I should've specified.

You're saying the other bit I mentioned is a bug, and usually that should work? That's good to know.

Thanks for that earlier tip about line of site gremlin hacking, really saved my bacon just now. Blew off the side of a van, managed to hack the thingy inside with only a couple turns left there.

I'll say one thing these games need is John Woo style, some double gun action. Though I think I did see a bird fly by one time.

So I can stop the Advent troops from all having poison rounds for a month, or stop intel costs from doubling for a month. Or stop a mystery third thing. This is a toughie.

Anybody have to deal with Advent troops having poison rounds for a month? Was it rough? Is every bullet shot at you for a month a poison attack, or does it have a small % chance etc?

Just got my first doomsday clock, 21 days til kabloomy. I'm in June, my best are mostly gravely wounded etc (just a usual mission with codec, snake women etc). I have the first blacksite open to do, and also I could do an alien facility in another territory that I got by hacking an intel lead or something.

Any guess which one would be easier? Also, do they both reset me to zero red bars and stop the clock?

The facility icons should have some pips underneath them that shows how many bars they'll remove. The blacksite removes 2 bars iirc.

For me the alien facility has two red pips under it, but the blacksite just has a glowing white hexagon around it without any red pips there. Any guess on which would be more difficult? I guess I could try them both see what happens.

Muton Autopsy for the Plasma Grenade and High Explosives projects at the proving grounds. Plasma Grenade upgrades the damage of frag grenades by 2 and radius by 1, High Explosives does the same for almost every other form of grenade by turning it into a "____ bomb" instead of a "____ grenade". Flashbangs seem to be the exception.

Though, since flashbangs seem to be a 0-damage grenade instead of a no-damage grenade, the Volatile Mix grenadier ability can make them deal 2 damage.

Thanks, I just recently unlocked the Advanced Explosives project. Surprised there's no upgrade for the flashbang itself though, maybe giving it a bigger radius etc.

I gotta say, it's annoying how you lose a region whenever you skip a mission. I lost the East Coast because I couldn't do the Retaliation mission, so I re-bought it for 66 intel or so, then within a couple weeks there's a standard strike first get some supplies council mission thingy that if I skip, I have to make contact with the East Coast for a third time. Plus I only have 18 intel, and I'm just trying to do a little prep to do a blacksite (10 days until extinction folks). And the blacksite is in that region.

Enemy Unknown gave you a lot more breathing room in the campaign, I beat that on my first attempt somehow (though with some reloading).

I just finally beat the first blacksite, wowsers that was tough. 20 enemies, evaced as the last 3 arrived, only one gravely wounded survivor.

For the record, the first blacksite only removed one pip on the doom bar after stopping the countdown. I have one other facility available because of intel, welp, I'm gonna be at 95% Doomsday bar for the foreseeable future. This game plays for keeps!

So Blacksites. I feel like I don't have a rhythm for this phase of the game yet. I did the story chain and took out the first blacksite. Then I skulljacked some random dude and got a lucky unlock for a Blacksite on another continent, which was neat I guess.

Not really sure where to go from here though and I need another one lined up for the next time the avatar project advances. Am I just supposed to keep skull-jacking dudes until I find all the sites or is there some other method? Is it possible to go back and hit a site after it gets rebuilt or do I have to "find" it again?

Pretty much I'm at the point where I'm not ready for the endgame but I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing with the overworld anymore.

Make contact on the worldmap with new areas, put radios in, then you can go to futher places on the map where more of those plot thingies are. And by doing research on things you uncover more stuff, like being able to build a Shadow Chamber. (I haven't built that yet)

My issue is I think I procrastinated too long on expanding, so I just don't quite have enough money or intel to expand and keep up with the doomsday bar too well. That and all the dying.

So those missions where you protect some device, those don't make sense to me. You arrive and move one turn, then in the fog some enemy shoots it for eight damage immediately. I guess we arrived just in time for when the enemy decided to slowly have one guy shoot at this thing thing halfheartedly.

Seems like an oversight that you can't build medkits after upgrading to the nanomedit. I could use any medkits (since I've lost some along the way), but I don't have any viper corpses at the moment so I can't build any.

Anyways, my overall feeling on this game is that it's not quite as good as the last one. Enemy Unknown had better difficulty balance for me, much less punishing. Still had fun with this one, but I'm about done with it for now.
