I actually think the late Group B era, say '85 and '86, is nowhere near as enjoyable to watch as the Group 4 and early Group B days. The drivers simply looked scared and the cars couldn't be driven to anything like their potential.

Alain Post posted:I like Group A (the Lancia/Toyota period and the later mixed Group A/World Rally Car period) more than Group B. You could make a decent case for 1998-2001 being the peak of WRC. Group A was really, really good up until they neutered the events and the mega-fraud Makinen rose to prominence. Every rally became the same after that: Colin McRae would scream off into a ten minute lead after four stages and then drive into a tree, Sainz would then valiantly maintain a lead even as he struggled with punctures right up until the inevitable point his car would break down, and eventually Makinen would finish the rally 2 seconds ahead of all the actually interesting drivers.

CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:A four time WRC champion that is universally respected in a team with less budget and resources than anyone else is a mega-fraud, gotcha. Well, he'd only be a small fraud if he hadn't won four titles, wouldn't he? Seriously though, it took an incredible amount of things going his way for that to happen: Toyota's ban, Colin McRae always crashing out from the lead at crucial moments, Carlos Sainz's constant unbelievable bad luck... what year was it Sainz's car literally died 200 meters from the end of the season?

CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:It doesn't deny that Makinen is in actual fact considered one the truly great rally drivers and on a level above McRae and Sainz - Is Loeb a fraud because he had completely inhuman luck and had cars that didnt break down alongside monster budgets? There truth is that what you call "luck" is in fact proper preparation and caring about details, two things Makinen was legendary about *especially* given the lovely budgets Mitsubitshi worked with - and still is today now he's about to bring Toyota into the WRC once again. Plus you know, it's kinda important to stay on the road if you want to win. It was a simple, basic, old and extremely obvious joke, my dude. Jesus.
