69 MPH? Very nice!

No seriously I see Wikipedia says:

quote:

On the afternoon of April 12, 1934, the Mount Washington Observatory recorded a windspeed of 231 miles per hour (372 km/h) at the summit, the world record for most of the 20th century, and still a record for measured wind speeds not involved with a tropical cyclone.
so I guess 69 would be relatively nice.

Well, both men made it across Antarctica. I look forward to seeing what dumb idea someone will come up with next so they can also claim to be first.

Turns out the death zone is bad for you, who could have known

I think we should start calling it "the xtreme zone" so we don't freak out the clients.

I wish I could see Everest without too much environmental impact but it's insanely exploitative, even if the money kinda helps the people, it's not that cut and dry.

I know someone who has "seen" it without climbing it.
I'm not sure where exactly they went but a quick look around on Google Maps led me to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kala_Patthar which says it has the best views of Everest. Nowhere near the death zone, and I'm guessing you can safely take your trash home with you.

Exactly how hard is the trek to base camp? Are there any risks?

I'm pretty sure there is a risk of getting altitude sickness, if you're unlucky and have below average genes for that or something. Also in 2015 an avalanche killed at least 19 people there.

I think there are other places in the world that are at the same altitude but road-accessible, I always figured if I was going to go to base camp I'd like to visit somewhere else of the same altitude first, so if I'm prone to altitude sickness I can get driven back down in a hurry.

Someone posted this show which covered the death of Shriya "that Canadian Photoshop woman" Shah-Klorfine to either this thread or the GBS one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEcHBFs-qME

It's interesting because there's actually video that she took herself in there.

Even if you're not interested in her story, here's an impressive panorama of the traffic jam on the way to the summit from that year:

Until you see tents (which must be camp 4) you haven't seen the worst of it yet!

:yeshaha:

He says in https://www.alanarnette.com/blog/2019/05/23/everest-2019-3-new-deaths-now-6-on-everest-15-overall/ that there were over 800 people that attempted Everest this year so 150 on K2 doesn't really sound like that much!
