Baudolino posted:Would`nt he have died if he stayed with her?The death zone is not a place you wanna hang out in for one minute more then you have to. Seems just as much a matter of survival to abandon her. Better one corpse then two. Neither of them would have died if they had just turned around and went back when she felt she couldn't go on anymore. He asked her if he could keep going and she said she'd that was fine and she'd just wait there for him. If instead he had said "Oh, you can't make it? Let's both start back down together so you don't die" she might have lived.

Some of it was at night. I had the same image in my head when I read it years ago. There's a whole part where people were waiting overnight.

Unless you're trying to take a picture of stars, there probably won't be any in the final image. People claim the moon landings are fake because there are no stars in the pictures. In reality, the moon is so bright, there's no way to take a picture that has a clear image of the surface as well as the stars in the sky.

Terrible Opinions posted:So why are the stars more impressive at Everest than in outerspace, or are you saying that top of Everest type mountains is the pinnacle of amazeballs we're getting? I'd totes say that the mountain range level lights qualify as amazeballs. It's not the location but the exposure time. Elwood set the exposure time so a lot of light could hit the sensor. More light than your eye would be able to gather.

Picnic Princess posted:It's a total mixed bag. I can see why he's so obsessed and passionate, but at the same time, with a kid, it's like maybe you should take a step back from recklessness because there's another life dependent on you. I was pretty reckless for a while and then I nearly died, and after that moment I totally scaled back and couldn't push myself like I used to ever again. And I don't even have a kid. I suppose maybe since he hasn't personally had a near miss he still feels fairly invincible even though he knows of so many deaths, he isn't that worried, but his situation is far more serious than mine was. Most scrambling accidents result in injuries, whereas most base jumping accidents result in death. Based on that video he seems to realize he has his son and needs to stop doing so much stupid stuff. Seems like this Everest thing is something he feels like he really needs to do no matter what. After that he might be able to say he's done. Though you can't expect a long life if your immediate reaction to being able to glide on your own is "yeah but we should do this five feet away from a jagged cliff."
