Should countries boycott the Olympics from a serious health concern?
Yes. Northern European states, where the mosquito that spread the virus don't exist, will have a much easier time winning if everyone from the rest of the world stays home. Seriously though, yeah, seems like the best course of action if the games aren't outright cancelled.

Voluntary isolation and self-monitoring is much easier to maintain on the smaller population of "individuals who are olympic athletes" than it is on the population of "all individuals who travel internationally to attend the olympics."
Plus Olympic athletes seem like they could be relatively easily be made comfortable with isolation. Basically just put everyone from a single sport (or related sports) in a place with the right training equipment/facilities to train at an Olympic level. Also hand out condoms like crazy because those are going to be needed.

Shoulda held the games in Chicago. Alas, IOC is far too corrupt an organization to act in the olympic's best interest.
The IOC is too corrupt an organization to act in the interest of anyone, to be fair.

Best case scenario: The games aren't cancelled, and the virus spreads around the earth. It becomes as common as hpv or herpes a. The human pop plummets in a generation as the majority of babies are born with defects. Some super white northern sub type like Scandinavians wind up being immune and inheriting the earth..
Sweden's institutional experience with eugenics combined with its arms industry will pay off big time.

This doesn't account for the audience members, a lot of people from a lot of countries fly in for the Olympics including dignatories, politicians, royalty... You can't isolate them all. Or at all, considering they require stadiums where you will be near infected people.
Well yeah, but we were just discussing the athletes.

For the good of the world, the US needs to bomb every stadium in Brazil. It would in effect be a preemptive strike on biological warfare laboratories, and entirely justified given the stated intention of bringing thousands of Americans there where they will be infected with a terrible disease they can then bring home to the US.

Can't we just release our genetically modified sterile mosquitoes and be done with it yet?
The sterility gene hitches a ride on a mosquito-born parasite, ends up in the human body, turn all infected men sterile.

Blaming Zika is, in a way, protecting their families. The alternative is calling Brazil a shithole and the Olympics a shambles, at the risk of incurring the wrath of Brazilians everywhere, as well as the the criminals behind it.

My recurring morbid joke about these Olympics is that the best thing you can say about them is that they probably won't be THE worst Olympics ever since Munich has set a really high bar in that regard.
Not that high. All you need is a single shoddily build stand to beat Munich (even including the terrorist deaths), and there has already been two deaths related to shoddy construction. Then there's the open sewer which athletes are going to be competing in, which has "1.7 million times the virus levels that would be considered hazardous in Europe or the US", which doesn't bode well for anyone competing there.

Plus as Rangpur mentioned, the whole corruption/police/gang issues, which probably doesn't mix well with potentially valuable kidnapping/robbery targets. I suppose there is also the possibility of ISIS making good on their promises, but that's probably less likely than any of the other issues beating Munich.

It's literally the origin of the Olympic games?

That's not a very good logistical argument.
Pretty sure the thing that would make "far more sense logistically" is the permanent Olympic base bit, Greece just gets the gig because of its origins there. I don't think it should be totally discounted from a logistical perspective though, in a scenario where it had a permanent setup. I mean, Greece is relatively close to the center of world population (and close to a bunch of rich countries), and the country is also so geared toward tourism anyway that it'd just be business as usual except a bit more. A Mediterranean climate is of course also really useful for the Olympics, ensuring clear skies for the games.

A basic rule of fire safety is that you grab anything you don't want to lose when the alarm goes off. You'd think Australians would know that, considering their country turns into a raging inferno every year.

No, that's just what you're told, that's not what anyone who has to do it regularly does.
Pretty much. I've "evacuated" around 50 times in the last two years due to highly sensitive fire alarms and people doing things they weren't supposed to. It really doesn't take long for people to just really not give a gently caress. That said, I'd probably be out the door pretty quickly if I had somehow ended up in a potentially burning Brazilian building.

That's the one major fuckup in the organization, I have no idea why they didn't move the competition if the water is THAT bad like every foreign media organization is reporting. However, on the third mutant hand all Brazilians have due to pollution, Zika and having to hold an extra wallet to pay off police officers, it's also one of those things that are much worse for locals than for the event itself. They're reporting the pollution levels are under control where the events will happen and there's a concentrated effort to clean up garbage, so chances are everything is gonna run fine.
How do you clean up pollution levels like that, on a rapid (but temporary) basis? Does Brazil have a giant toilet cistern ready to flush all the water away?
