The issue is clear, and yet once again Margaret Chan refuses to act. WHO should immediately declare the Zika epidemic a PHEIC.

They are meeting today to decide to do exactly that. If they do declare it expect pressure to start to mount to delay the Olympics by a year; they won't cancel it but a delay of a year should be enough for a vaccine to have been created, tested, and produced in sufficient numbers.

So this is just one of many unintended effects Climate Change is going to have on nations/the world, correct? Warmer climates, more mosquitoes in new areas, more chances for proliferation of formerly minor, localized diseases?

Or did we just somehow miss the Tiny Head virus for like 50 years?

Its not an effect of Climate Change, its an effect of Globalization. This is a Virus that has been known about for 60 years, but its been stuck in a corner of Africa and seemingly has little effect there (assumed to be resistance in the local population after being exposed to it for thousands of years), but thanks to the increased mobility of the worlds population its got a hitch from its homeland to the America's where there isn't any resistance to it so its spreading like wildfire.

The microcephaly was an unknown side affect, and its only assumed given its from Zika due to autopsies done on babies who have died with microcephaly and discovered the presence of virus in them. Also microcephaly is very nasty, and will kill them usually around early adulthood, some times earlier hence why their has already been some babies die. Children with it generally require 24/7 care as well its one of the worst conditions for children around, hence why Zika needs to be dealt with ASAP.

Last year Brazil's total number of babies with microphaly was 300.

This month the number is 3000 and all but 10 had the Zika virus. It's a pretty strong correlation.

The issue is though that there has been no cases of babies born with microphaly who have been linked Zika outside of Brazil, yet. As to why this is, is unknown at this time. Its led to questions of what is different with Brazil, is it just greater incidence of Zika or some other factor. Until a link is found or cases of microphaly with Zika outside of Brazil there will be scare stories with I believe no factual basis e.g. that it was being caused by GM mosquitoes released in Brazil to fight the Dengue virus.

Does anyone know which arthropods can function as a vector and their geographical spread?

CDC lists it as just the Aedes genus of Mosquitoes.

http://www.cdc.gov/zika/transmission/index.html

Did see a composite image a few days ago that combined all the spreads in this paper:

http://elifesciences.org/content/4/e08347

Guess that many have been created by the CDC or WHO, so it might be available on their sites. But the images in that paper show the geographic spreads involved.

From a strictly biological perspective, zika is one of the least bad viruses spread by Aedes. Its mortality rate among healthy adults stands at zero. Microcephaly is obviously extremely bad but it's important to keep the following statistics in mind: dengue and yellow fever sicken hundreds of millions of people every year, and kill tens of thousands, and that includes babies. Unless zika evolves into a superbug, it's never going to have the same impact.

From someone who has worked with children and young adults suffering with Microcephaly, if Microcephaly is confirmed to be possible to unborn infants due to Zika then Zika is significantly worse than even Yellow Fever never mind Dengue. Microcephaly is quite possibly the best side effect you could have on a virus if your intention was to long term overwhelm and destroy a populous, it in effect means at least the child's mother is an unproductive member of society for the next 20 years as caring for a child with Microcephaly is usually a 24/7 occupation. Its this reason why many people are getting very scared by Zika as it has the potential to be devastating long term - IF if does cause Microcephaly, which is still not proven.

Yes Zika doesn't kill (reports overnight there may have been some deaths in Brazil with rare neurological conditions caused by the Zika infection, so it might kill but very rarely), but IF it does cause Microcephaly its side effects will cost hundreds times more than even rampant Yellow fever would.

It could be that the unsold tickets are to events that people care less about. I don't think the summer Olympics have actually sold out in a long while.

London effectively did. There still was pictures of the odd event with empty seats though thanks to corporate tickets.
