That must be, like, a pretty substantial bonus for you? Congrats!

Edit: Not trying to be condescending or anything, it was just that you mentioned previously that one goon's (Kastein?) tax payment was bigger than your income...

Dang, this is a magic morning. The president of our college got let go at a closed session board meeting last night and the director of our building was named interim president so my boss moved up to director and I moved into my bosses position. Hello 6 months of 50% pay raise!

I just got word that my boss quit today. He represents 70% of all core knowledge about our rather narrow niche. This leads me to believe that my company is not very smart, as the smart thing to do would have been to keep him happy as a pig in poo poo.

Who was the AI goon recommending the Ubiquity Unifi access points here? I need to pick your brain.

I've also raved about their gear, though I've only used a couple of the Nanostation Loco M5s in a point-to-point. Haven't tried a UAP yet but I've heard nothing but good about them.

Ask your question, bolind :sun:

poo poo, work and sleep got in the way.

Basically I want to know if I've understood everything right. I just got an ER-X and a UAP-AC-LITE and things are working well. I've had some concerns about power (running both on the PoE injector that came with the unifi) but it seems to work so far, so not so worried there.

What I'm doing is trying to understand a multi-AP setup. How about this:

So, in order to power the UAPs. Of course one could use a PoE injector per UAP, either close to the hub or close to the UAPs or a mix. Am I correct in understanding that the Unifi AC LITEs run weird nonstandard 24V PoE? How long can the cable runs be? What PoE switch should I get? I'm not looking to support a whole bunch of APs, three at the most, I'd say.

1) Correct, they use 24v POE
2) POE can be injected at any point of a standard, 100M cable run. The limitation here is the cable standard, not the POE.
3) Ubiquiti makes POE switches, but I've always ran the injectors. One per AP. No reason to buy special hardware when you're dealing with such a low number of AP's.

Geoj posted:

Yes, they use a proprietary PoE system instead of 802.3af/at which requires you to use the included injectors, a Ubiquiti toughswitch ($$$) or alternatively they also sell PoE adapters that allow you to power their devices off of a normal PoE switch.

Same as any other single continuous ethernet cable run - 100 meters.

Thanks a million you guys! I keep being surprised of how much poo poo the AI collective knows. If anyone have questions about embedded Bluetooth development, let me know... :)

Office/engineering work is OK, but man I'm jonesing for some manual labor. Luckily I'm drilling manly holes in concrete within the next couple of days and with a bit of luck my mate will get the parts he needs, and we'll fix some stuff on his Audi.

If I had to do it every day, I'd probably have a different opinion.

Slightly related, two-three weeks ago I raised my desk at work, wheeled my chair under it, and started standing up at my computer. The first week resulted in slightly sore feet/calves, now I can't imagine anything else. I even stand up at meetings. I can only recommend it.

Well through a series of experiments it now looks like I've become slightly lactose intolerant :(

Milk in tea or coffee, no problem. Latte, problem.
Cream in any quantities, problem.
Straight drink 100mls of milk, major problem.
Cheese other than mozzarella, crippling problem.

This sucks, I love milk and cheese and I don't have any other allergies or dietary nonsense. My lasagne recipe has cheese and cheese sauce in it, pizza's with mozzarella only don't taste quite right. This is going to be annoying.

Good job on pinpointing what you can and cannot eat. Good friend of mine also suddenly (in his early thirties) developed some sort of milk allergy. It might not be the lactose, I believe he's intolerant to certain dairy proteins, so maybe pester your doctor until you guys figure out exactly what the problem is.

Between last time you Brits preached home made, cold risen dough for pizzas I've actually started baking quite seriously. Breads, pizzas the works. I'm curious what tips you guys have. For starters, what kind of flour, and whole grain or regular?

The single time I took my BMW to the dealership I witnessed a guy pay $5k for a thorough, yet pretty standard service. He even said thanks. I can take a month off from work for that kind of money, buy all the tools and parts, and still come out ahead.

I've gone 2mm since early twenties and it rocks. No worries about hairstyle, bottle of shampoo lasts forever, no bed head/hat head, drying it takes five seconds. I've also saved like 3000 bucks on haircuts.

Only minus is that it can be pretty chilly when the temperature is low, and a sunburned scalp sucks big time.

I can't stand this argument. If you have a computer, you should have a printer, period. There's no economic justification otherwise. You can watch deal sites and pick up a perfectly fine laser printer for under $40 at several times per year.

I don't want the clutter and I can print at work five days a week, just requires a bit of planning. When I got my condo I told myself that I wouldn't get a printer, and then just drive the eleven kilometers and print stuff should I ever need it urgently on a weekend. I think that happened once or twice since 2009.

If you aren't able to print at work, I can kinda see the point. Just don't get a crappy inkjet one that'll cost its own price twice over in new ink cartridges whenever you want to use it.
