hounds played really well but the rhinos scored early and their stupid ginger goalkeeper had himself a game. could not have asked for worse weather, 40 and pissing rain. solid crowd showed up despite that.

e: also, can we go to these games and actually support the clubs, rather than starting pissing contests with rival supporters groups? the "steel army" and the rhinos traveling support just chanted about each other all night, at one point even criticizing one group's drum playing. no one cares. it's childish and cringeworthy and encapsulates everything people hate about american soccer. keep that poo poo on reddit.

Rowdies add forward Eliot Richards from England for spring

Tampa Bay Rowdies head coach Stuart Campbell has reached into his past for the team’s latest signing, forward Eliot Richards.

The Rowdies have signed Richards for the 2016 spring season with an option for the fall.

Richards, who most recently played for Bath City on loan from Cheltenham Town in England, has had various stints with clubs throughout the England Football League. Most notably, Richards spent five seasons with the Bristol Rovers, the team most closely associated with Campbell.

Richards and Campbell overlapped at Rovers, with Richards making 112 appearances for the club. Campbell made 288 appearances for Rovers, serving as captain and caretaker manager before departing to join the Rowdies.

“Eliot is someone that we believe has a role to play with both our first team and Rowdies 2 in the NPSL,” Campbell said. “As we begin the process of building Rowdies 2, we looked at a few young players while we were in England and it just so happens that Eliot became available sooner than we expected. I know him well and he falls into both the NASL and NPSL categories for us.”

On the negative side a number of Mob people report on Facebook that the Miami FC front office organization and game day operations are a spectacular mess. Bad experience with parking, bad experience with getting visiting supporters group (Ralph's Mob) into the stadium, no security for visiting supporters group, complete lack of any kind of front office support or coordination with visiting supporters groups, etc. They don't just sound disorganized they sound like they aren't even aware of the potential problems they are facing yet.

But they're still getting really good crowds (I've been told they have 3,000 season subscriptions in a 5,500 seat stadium, and that sellouts will likely be the norm this year), have absurd amounts of corporate sponsorships, and honestly I'd prefer staying where we are right now to being part of a pyramid scheme MLS.

Rowdies Set to Sign Former England National Team Star Joe Cole

by JAKE NUTTING

The Tampa Bay Rowdies have got their man, and it turns out they’ve known they did for quite some time.

The Unused Substitutes has confirmed through multiple sources that former English national team national team veteran Joe Cole has signed a deal with the club. The move to secure the 34-year-old attacker has been in the works for months now, and he could be available for selection by the home match against Rayo OKC on May 14 if his visa and International Transfer Certificate are approved in time.

The contract runs through the 2016 and 2017 North American Soccer League seasons, with the club holding a club option for 2018.

Cole’s signing marks a potentially important moment in the history of the modern era Rowdies, who are seeking to announce themselves as a serious competitor in the market for international high-profile players.

One source told the Unused Substitutes that principal owner Bill Edwards stated his desire to sign a player with a certain cachet that could provide a significant impact for the club both on the field and off late last year and that Cole was a player the technical staff quickly identified to fit that bill.

Had a great trip with Lane United's (of the USL PDL) supporters group the Red Aces up to face the Portland Timbers U-23's yesterday. While there weren't a ton of us, we still had a great time and raised a good ruckus. Basically no security at the pitch so we openly drank and smoked throughout the match.

It was a bit of a cagey affair, but ended 1-0 with Lane United earning their first road win in their short history. This was especially great because the Oregon State coach, who usually has his players play with us during the summer, decided he would prefer them to play with a big name club like the Timbers. Our leading scorer from last season (Timmy Mueller) played up top all 90 minutes for the timbers and it's fair to say he had a poor game, probably due to the heckling he had to put up with.

Sharp: Major League Soccer not a good fit for Detroit

http://www.freep.com/story/sports/columnists/drew-sharp/2016/05/03/major-league-soccer-mls-detroit/83873072/

Detroit isn’t a sports town as much as it is a Detroit sports town. The passion stems from generational legacies as well as long, collective suffering. The wait makes it all worth it -- whether it's 42 years between Red Wings Stanley Cups, only two Tigers World Series titles in the last seven decades or 58 years -- and counting -- with the Lions.

That’s why Major League Soccer won’t work here. It won’t sell here. There’s no history. No tradition. No communal lamenting over missed opportunities.

It matters little that nearly 110,000 people filled Michigan Stadium two years ago, when Real Madrid played Manchester United -- only two of the five most valuable sports franchises in the world. But just because there’s a soccer audience in this area doesn’t make it a sustainable market for an MLS franchise. It’ll be cute for a while because it’s new. But then even the heartiest soccer fans will realize that the quality of the MLS is mediocre, at best.

And mediocrity only sells in Detroit sports if it comes from a team you’ve embraced your entire life.

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/soccer/sfl-david-beckham-miami-soccer-stadium-hits-snag-20160506-story.html

David Beckham's proposed soccer stadium in Miami has hit a new obstacle.

Negotiators for Beckham have balked at some of the terms Miami-Dade wants in exchange for a county-owned parcel, according to a Miami Herald report.

Per the report, Beckham and his partners "have yet to sign off on a string of hiring goals, employee benefits and local-business perks that Miami-Dade is demanding as part of the sale."

The group was already behind schedule as it worked toward bringing a 25,000-seat stadium to the Overtown neighborhood that would be home to a Major League Soccer expansion franchise.

Edit to add: speculation is that they'll just string along a series of 4 or 5 year leases since this does not require voter approval. Not sure why Edwards would want to commit to spending $70 million in Al Lang expansion without a long term lease; on the other hand who else is St. Pete going to rent Al Lang to? Will have to wait until Edwards announces how/if/when he finances the expansion; would think he would want to bring on additional investors too and in spite of denials he has to be thinking about MLS.

The Tampa Bay Rays still don’t know where or when they would construct a new stadium, but that is not stopping them from building up a political relationship with a key state lawmaker that could pay dividends when they do.

For the first time this year, and the second time since 2014, Tampa Bay Rays Baseball, Ltd, made a donation to a political committee run by influential state Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater. State campaign finance records show the Rays gave $5,000 in the closing days of April to a political committee Latvala runs called the Florida Leadership Committee. Two years ago, the Rays gave Latvala $15,000 for the same committee. Latvala will be the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee next year.

Latvala said the April 29 donation is “fairly routine and benign” and not really a signal of anything in the works in Tallahassee that would affect the Rays.

The Rays are far from the biggest donor to Latvala. His committee collected more than $150,000 just in April, according to new campaign finance documents. The biggest donation came from the William L. Edwards Revocable Trust, which gave $25,000 on the same day that the Rays made their donation. Bill Edwards is the chairman and CEO of the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer team.

A bill Latvala helped pass two years ago created a structure for sports teams to prove their economic benefits in order to qualify for state funding — up to $3 million a year for 30 years. But since then, no funding has been dedicated for any stadiums, despite requests from the Miami Dolphins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Daytona International Speedway for a share of state funding. The state Legislature, particularly the House, has been reluctant to approve funding for any sports stadiums amid growing opposition of using public money to fund professional sports facilities.

Tampa Bay Rowdies introduce midfielder Joe Cole

http://www.tampabay.com/sports/soccer/tampa-bay-rowdies-introduce-midfielder-joe-cole/2276866

ST. PETERSBURG — Rowdies owner Bill Edwards did not mince words when talking about the signing of former English Premier League midfielder Joe Cole.

"I think this is the most significant player to be signed in the NASL in its history,'' Edwards said.

Cole, 34, was officially introduced to media and fans in a news conference Wednesday morning at the Mahaffey Theater. His contract with Tampa Bay runs through the 2017 season, with a club option for 2018.

He arrived in St. Petersburg on Tuesday night after completing the season with Coventry City in the English First Division. He's scheduled to practice with the team today and Friday and, according to coach Stuart Campbell, will play Saturday at home against Rayo Oklahoma City.

Rodney Marsh and the original NASL 1970s/80s era Tampa Bay Rowdies legacy continues to pay dividends.

quote:

Edwards said the club started courting Cole about six months ago, when the Rowdies made a trip to England to play exhibition matches. Cole made a trip with his family to St. Petersburg in February to watch exhibition matches between the Rowdies and Major League Soccer teams.

While he had never been to the bay area, Cole said he was already familiar with the club.

"I heard of the Tampa Bay Rowdies because of Rodney Marsh,'' Cole said, referring to the former Rowdies star of the 1970s who, like Cole, came to the bay area after starring in England. "He was my grandparents' favorite player. The Rowdies are actually a big name in England. And when I came over here for a visit, I fell in love with the place and thought it would be a lovely place to play and live.''

The Rowdies are hoping Cole performs better than last year's big acquisition, former U.S. national team member Freddy Adu. Adu has not played in a match this season despite being eligible.

Cole scored one goal in 15 appearances with Coventry City. The Rowdies (2-1-2) have scored only four goals in five matches and are hoping Cole will provide an offensive spark.

So the owner of FC Cincinnati has decided to try and break our previous USL attendance record this weekend.... He is trying to get to 25K Saturday...

I know Monday they surprised 10K tickets which is good, but I don't know if it is enough yet... The weather originally looked like rain, which would stop people from coming out, but it now looks like rain in the morning and then clear for the game.

They are really pushing marketing with the Bengals for this weekends game to get some new faces in the seats. I hope we can break the record, but with UC being out for the summer and the coldish weather and slight chance of rain I don't see it happening:

Jeff Berding tweet at Chad Johnson to try and get him to come out but he was going to be in Seattle already suppoesdly, I am actually surprised he didn't take him up on the offer as much as he loves soccer.

Jeff Berding tweet at Chad Johnson to try and get him to come out but he was going to be in Seattle already suppoesdly, I am actually surprised he didn't take him up on the offer as much as he loves soccer.

bring back parkes, let him kick burfict
