Rules for posting in LP:

  1. LP Threads only, please!

Don't post a thread that's not an LP Thread. General discussion should go in the Sandcastle, and we have a Recommendation Thread for plugging threads you love.

Rarely, we permit threads for discussion of specific issues that won't fit in the Sandcastle. If you have an idea for such a thread, please ask a mod for approval.

  2. Keep the General SA Forum Rules in mind!

If you take away only one thing from them, make it this thing:

    Lowtax posted:

Before replying, please ask yourself the following question: "Does my reply offer any significant advice or help contribute to the conversation in any fashion?"

If you can answer "yes" to this, then please reply. If you cannot, then refrain from replying.
  3. Don't be a dick!

For the very most part, it takes a lot of effort to run an LP thread. Please be respectful of that when participating! We don't think we're asking a lot here. It is possible to air a grievance without being a dick. It is possible to be blunt without being a dick. Don't make it personal, don't use slurs, and remember; if you have to ask, you're probably being a dick.

If you really don't like a thread, vote 1 and post elsewhere.

  4. Don't be a creep either!

Always remember that there is such a thing as liking an LPer too much. Respect boundaries and don't White-Knight - let the OP respond to constructive criticism themselves. And if someone's being unconstructive...

  5. Report shitheads!

This cannot be stressed enough. LP threads aren't trivial to follow, and no amount of moderators can follow them all. We probably won't see bad posts if they're not reported! So use that report button if you've got it (requires Platinum), or contact a moderator some other way if you don't.

  6. Respect spoiler rules!

If the LPer requests spoilers be tagged, then tag your spoilers! If the LPer requests spoilers not be posted at all, don't post spoilers at all!

Don't use spoiler tags for things that aren't spoilers.

  7. Don't make pointless low-content posts!

Posts like "Saw 30 replies, thought there was an update!" add nothing and nobody wants to see them. Posting like this will get you probated fast.

  8. Be careful embedding Youtube videos!

YouTube is lousy for spoilers. Even if the video you post is innocent, you have no control over related videos. If in doubt, use Polsy.

Rules for posting LPs:

  1. Above all else, show us you give a drat!

Don't just post a link to your channel and be done with it. Threads that are barebones, transparently farming for reputation or exposure, or otherwise just plain insincere are liable to be gassed. There's no hard and fast rules on how to run a thread, but one way or another, if you put in effort (or don't), it will show in the end.

  2. No YouTube dumps, no reposts!

The point of an LP thread is, if not participation, at least discussion. It's not against the rules to have a backlog or even to record an entire playthrough in advance - just don't post it all at once.

Also, don't re-post an LP you've already started elsewhere. Create your LP for the thread, not the other way around.

  3. No shilling for donations!

This is actually a forum-wide rule but bears repeating here. It is not against the rules to have a Patreon or what-have-you, but don't go plugging it in your thread.

However, if you are streaming for charity (eg, Extra Life) and are encouraging viewers to donate to that instead of to you personally, that's fine by us.

  4. No Hentai!

    Don't. Just don't.

There's no rule against NSFW content generally, but if it's a one-off thing in an otherwise clean thread people will probably appreciate if you tag and link it rather than posting it inline.

Guidelines and Resources for LPers:

So you want to make an LP, huh? Fantastic! Here are some pointers:

  • The Sandcastle is for hints, advice and quality checks, as well as chat. It's not a rule, but we advise new LPers to run prospective LPs past the Sandcastle before starting threads; you're bound to get some helpful feedback, even if it's just people telling you to :justpost:.

  • The Tech Support Fort can tell you everything you'd ever want to know and more about recording, encoding, audio, editing, hardware and software tools you'll find indispensable.

  • When you start a thread, post a link in the New LP Thread Thread! LP is quite an active subforum and new threads can easily go unnoticed for a while, so use this thread to help people get in on the ground floor.

  • To keep on top of new LPs as they arrive, either follow the aforementioned New LP Thread Thread or use this RSS feed, or even this handy If-This-Then-That recipe.

  • If you're itchin' to LP something but aren't quite sure what to LP, there are some places you may want to check out; The LP Request Thread will tell you whats in demand, the Recommendation Thread will tell you what's hot, and the LP Archive and LP Master List will show you what's come before. We would remind you at this point that there is no rule against multiple, even concurrent, LPs of the same game, so don't feel you have to break new ground! If you want to buddy up you can find co-commentators in the Co-commentation Station. And if you just want to stream, we've got a Stream Thread that wants to hear from you.

  • Your friendly neighbourhood moderators are here to help. PM us or shout in the Sandcastle if you need something or want to run something by us.

We were recently reminded that dumping heavily in-progress LPs was technically not against the rule as written, so we're updating it to match the rules we're actually enforcing. Seems fair.
