Almost everything told through the interludes actually happened. The Fourth Crusade is infamous for basically turning the templars into mercenaries and thieves.

I've not been able to find much mention of the Templars being featured in the 4th Crusade, I found this - http://www.dashinvaine.co.uk/page%20templars%20blurb.htm - which suggests the Templars had very little involvement. Usually the only time the Templars seem to be mentioned in the context of the 4th Crusade is that 10 years earlier they bought Cyprus from Richard I.

By the way, I'm really enjoying the playthrough. It's really smooth, it's interesting to hear your explanation of game-mechanics that are not immediately obvious, and you do an excellent job of highlighting the charm of the story without it being intrusive.

I thought the Templars returned to their home base on Cyprus after Robert de Sable failed to retrieve the Apple during the Third Crusade.

Thanks! I'm really glad to be able to share strange games like this.

Oh neat! I confess I haven't watched any of the videos yet, as I have been rather busy, but a friend and I were considering doing a co-op LP of this very game! Though a flawed game, it still has plenty of charm. And it is surprisingly spot on with its history. If there were any crusade that could be considered cursed, the Fourth definitely qualifies. The game got me interested in doing a bit of reading about it and the entire thing was a horrible mess that got everyone excommunicated (even if only temporarily) pretty drat quick. I'm not sure if I'd follow through on LPing this, honestly, but I was considering encouraging historical chat on the crusade itself and the political and religious environment surrounding it.

And yes, Esteban is a wonderful character.

I'm surprised that more than one person actually recalled this game fondly enough to consider LPing it.

To be sure. I remember being interested until I tried the demo, and my interest came to a grinding halt the moment I did. The execution of things like the QTEs, the shooting (which as you pointed out isn't really a big thing but is pretty much the second thing you have to do in the demo) and the repetitiveness of the combat wore me out before the tutorial was done and I just couldn't imagine playing a whole game of that.

Repetition really doesn't get to me unless I feel like there was no method to the repetition. In Deep Black, the repetition was a result of really cruddy environmental design, dumb enemies, and scathing difficulty. With Cursed Crusade, the repetition is a result of one of my favorite game elements: the idea that every enemy is basically another "human", and capable of all of the same moves as you, were you holding their weapons. As a result, enemy "types" are non-existent, and that creates massive repetition in combat. But I really don't mind.

This reminds me of Mount & Blade. The combat was simple to learn but hard to master, and also addictive as all hell.

All it took was to implement several directions of attacking and blocking and make damage dependent on physics. There were no unique moves, just the difference in how well you and the enemy used the several basic ones.

That sounds right up my alley. It's multiplayer only though, right?

Nope! It's got a pretty extensive single player where you can ride around like five countries, may become a vassal to one of them, gather your army, choose your battles (at least after you get out of the early game where you're weak enough that bandits can do whatever with you), take part in tournaments, become a merchant, take over castles for your liege or yourself and just a ton of little things. It's got no real final goals beyond what you make for yourself, but stands on its own pretty well as a sandbox. Multiplayer is combat-only, with several kinds of battles like a field battle, a siege, an attack on a village etc.

It's a little unpolished, but in exchange will usually run well on pretty much anything.

I have put over 600 hours into that game and its various mods, to my eternal shame, and I have never lost the simple pleasure of cutting a man in half with a rideby attack or headshotting someone from horseback. I have never once played multiplayer.

How can you say that about a game that rewards you for invading everyone, forcibly converting their religion and then wrapping it up by committing cultural genocide?

Esteban reminds me a lot of Luis Sera from RE4, only with a better name, which I think is part of why he's so awesome. Really though, are there any unlikable Spaniards in videogames?

I mean, he was set up as a villain with typical Ubisoft subtlety, but I guess he counts as unlikable.
