Do the Republicans do that? no they do not and it's hugely undemocratic but superdelegate pledges are also completely non-binding personal endorsements (before the convention), and it is very unlikely that superdelegates would vote en-masse to make someone who was down in pledged delegates the nominee regardless of commitments made earlier in the race- because the consequences for doing so are so obviously catastrophic in terms of schism/loss of legitimacy/reduced voter turnout/etc.
