Dumb engineers.

Heard one wanted to heat-stress test their doodad and asked to stick it in the ICP-OES torch. Like it was a Bunsen burner or something. Thing's around the temperature of the surface of the sun. It's one purpose in life is to obliterate any matter it touches. No we do not want your poo poo all over the icp chamber.

in a perfect world where you wouldn't be responsible for loving up the equipment, i would be like "go for it" then laugh as whatever it is gets separated into its constituent atoms

Would that really be any more forceful? For him to strike downward into the wood he'd need to be struggling against the force of the spring. Unless I'm missing something physics-wise.

The chopping head is probably quite heavy, and the spring is barely enough to hold it up. Give it a small assist and gravity and inertia handle the rest.

Magnesium? Or did the roof just collapse and let oxygen get to the fire-y bits?

It definitely was a backdraft, but it was the window breaking that triggered it, with fresh air being drawn in through the roof.

Couldn't/Shouldn't there be some safety mechanism for the oil pump that if it exceeds a certain frequency it shuts off or is that just causing the death of the engine more quickly?

I guarantee that shut-off mechanism will malfunction and destroy engines more frequently than runaways.

he probably caught the frame under the chin as his body was rotating from a reclined position to vertical. with enough force at work, even the dullest blade can cut.

edit: that is a horrible design for a supposed safety feature, too. "hey we noticed that people could fly off this and hit the ground. we've decided that you should hit a few net support frames instead. enjoy the ride."

it's not an actual detonation, just a confined deflagration. once the walls pop the pressure drops off pretty quick.
