Nerds are overwhelmingly white, sheltered, male and cliquish with results in them not being aware of how racist/sexist/etc... they are because they don't interact with people outside their weird subcultures. I've run into the same problem before myself and just accept the fact that you are going to have a hard time finding people into the same hobbies who are not sacks of human poo poo. Also there is a whole thread in TG for this kind of stuff.
