This deserves more than a single mention in the Linux thread, so here it is: What Is Vulkan 1.0 Vulkan is The Khronos Group's answer to Microsoft DirectX 12, Apple's Metal, and the former AMD Mantle API for providing high-performance graphics. Yes, Vulkan started out as being based upon AMD's Mantle tech, but it has evolved well beyond where it was left by AMD. While some people on web forums and elsewhere have talked of Vulkan as a re-branded Mantle, that is not true and has changed significantly since then -- it's no longer tied to AMD's GCN hardware design, Vulkan fits use-cases across all ecosystems, the API has evolved a lot after being reviewed by many different parties, etc. Khronos President Neil Trevett made it quite clear that Vulkan is much more than just a slightly different take on Mantle. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=vulkan-10 Please post about how Vulkan is gonna deprecate Windows as a gamer OS in this thread!

hm, since you bring it up, I guess it's because of this that this meme started all you really need is pulseaudio (or jack if you're a musician), it's actually mandatory to use pulseaudio if you want steam to work

Tankakern posted:Intel's given out a driver already! http://phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Intel-Mesa-Vulkan-Published Intel's launch day driver straight up says in the README that it doesn't even run outside of the source tree yet. It's rushed as hell, but that's fine, they're not pretending it's anything else. Also support for less-than-bleeding-edge GPU generations isn't 100% there yet. I'm tentatively excited for Vulkan but there's no guarantee it will gain any traction. It will be great if it does, there's no room for the crazy driver heuristic bullshit that is the D3D/OpenGL driver landscape at the moment, so you could end up with simple and performant open-source GPU drivers. Knowing nVidia though they'll still probably wholesale replace particular games' shader binaries with hand-tuned replacements though lol.

Some typical management at AMD that they could not release non-beta anything for an API derived from their own offering.

Also I'm the implication that people will stop shipping UE3 games any time soon or that UE3 will be ported to Vulkan It's like the Windows XP of game engines

Mr Dog posted:I'm tentatively excited for Vulkan but there's no guarantee it will gain any traction. what's the alternative? you either write a modern vulkan renderer which runs everywhere, or you spend the next decade maintaining a modern and legacy pipeline until anything older than win10 is eol-ed and continue to pay people to port your code to other platforms. if that metalvk things pans out you can run on mac too.
