They never appeared in Western releases of the original game. When she started to become an actual character in the Final Fight series the west relaxed a bit and translated her as a "woman" and not as a transsexual.



Roxy, the recolour of her, might actually just be a cis-woman but Poison has always been a transsexual of some kind. I thought this was common knowledge for years (just like Birdo).
