The R rating for games thing in Australia is super super dumb because all it actually means is that some stuff that would have been MA gets bumped up, the ACB still bans whatever the gently caress. My favourite part though is GTA V. IV was pre-R, and so got MA with the expected laundry list of reasons. As you'd probably also expect, V got an R. But because the laundry list of reasons was supposedly fine at MA, all the label says is objectionable about the game at all is drug use. AlphaKretin has a new favorite as of 04:18 on Feb 18, 2016 |

Oh man I just remembered Ubisoft's Just Dance series. It's been too long since I've given it a go to give you many specifics but they often bleep explicit versions of songs instead of using radio edits, and censor way more than any radio or the ERSB would require them to, most notably "cherry" in I Kissed a Girl.

Come to think of it we can probably blame 4kids for the sub vs dub debate. 4KIDS!

Presumably it would be another charge to slap on a child molester and anyone trying to strike it down would look really bad on account of "trying to reduce that pedophile's sentence! ". Jurisprudence!

Well that's what I mean by "trying to strike it down". It's all conjecture anyway, I doubt the law's been called on successfully since it was declared unconstitutional, or at least I hope it hasn't.

What? There's not way that actually appeased a previously angry ratings board, that character is still transparently, literally Hitler. Wow.

That doesn't surprise me in the least. Oh well. Content: You know how ESRB makes games have that "online content not rated" disclaimer because you can't reasonably rate what random dickheads say over voice chat? Yeah that's way too logical for the ACB, "online interactivity" is a rating category they look at and bump games up for.

In all seriousness, what the hell is the point of ratings, especially ones centred around the age at which you theoretically become an adult who is mature enough to make their own choices, if you're going to arbitrarily remove things or ban media for being inappropriate anyway? Lookin' at you especially with that last point, ACB. And if you're censoring things because they're inappropriate for kids, maybe the media in question wasn't originally intended for consumption by kids?

IIRC Noseprear end still can't be, and in newer games it doesn't allow a swear or misspelling of in any language, and instead a trade ban you straight out aren't allowed to use the name. Good job teaching kids new and exciting foreign swears!

Veotax posted:I don't believe the character was underage, but they changed a scene that they said could be seen as gay conversion. Essentially a lesbian character gets drugged to see all men as women and ends up falling in love with the (male) protagonist, even after the drugs wear off. The character's ~quirky anime trait~ was being a chick who jokingly flirted with chicks, but wasn't actually romantically interested in them ( is she's the daughter of a womaniser and does it better than her father). The main character gives her a potion that makes her see him as a woman to help her open up or whatever, and the love comes from realising she doesn't need it. All that said, it is weird, and stupid, and the change was for the better even if only to prevent controversy and arguments.

FWIW by all accounts the translation made the gay characters worse.

A thing happened in the SHSC Ticket thread that reminded me of a beef I havelarchesdanrew posted:A blocked website came in. odiv posted:Better make sure no college students can get information about Alcoholics Anonymous! Web filters. gently caress them. They are always incredibly, productivity-hamperingly overzealous (though often also ineffectual where it might possibly count), and for what? So a teenage school student who's going to procrastinate anyway can't play flash games except for the site they inevitably missed? So an employee who'll be found out and fired/sternly Talked To either way can't watch porn? On a note more amusing than bitter, one free WiFi network I sometimes use blocks these forums (though not the front page) under "weapons", presumably just because the favicon is a grenade.
