The reader base for yuri specific manga like Yuri Hime is like 75% woman and a lot of the higher profile authors like Akiko Morishima and Takemiya Jin are lesbians. Yaoi is main written for women but there is also bara (admittedly mostly porn) and gecomi (gay comics) aimed at gay men.
