One of the raddest things about this cover is that I think everybody on it is actually meant to be a main character from the game, but it's like the artist had a 1-3 word description (i.e. "staff guy") to go on and absolutely no game material to reference. From top left, clockwise: Emperor Barbarossa, the hero, Leknaat, Wendy, Ted. With Futch on the center riding his dragon. For content, Phantasy Star 2 has one of those good-bad covers that simultaneously has a bizarrely different style from the game itself while still looking cool and appealing to the fantasy/sci-fi nerds who'd buy it.

Do any of the retro game collections have any really good or clever box art? They all almost seem pretty bland. As a lark, I'd almost like to do up a fake new cover for my Genesis collection for 360 and have it look more like a classic Genesis cart cover. Edit: I guess the Mega Drive Collection actually DOES sort of have the gridlined framing at the bottom of the cover art, where as the US version gets a pic of Sonic.

Haven't been able to find one for the Genesis collection but such custom boxart does exist.

Anime was outlawed until the PS1 era so everything had to have at least the box art westerned up or, in some cases, completely removing the sprites from the Ranma 1/2 game and replacing them with more appropriate ones.

From the "10 out of 10 GOTY" genre: This maybe would have made more sense in an alternate timeline where they also released ports from other platforms under this label, or something. As it is, DoS was the only game to get this treatment.

As much as I like The Longest Journey, some localized versions got a terrible cover like this Spanish one below. It seems to be a running theme with those late 1990s adventure games that the cover must feature at least one uncanny face with weird expression and pack as much random poo poo in every corner as humanly possible. Also, some old computer game goodies: For some reason I just remembered an early 20th century Polish painter who made portraits while testing various substances. I am not entirely sure why. There's also this beauty: …where Cool Spot seems to have become a cross between a pirate and evil genius. http://i.imgur.com/lNp3isL.jpg Scratch that, I am blind. How about C64 version then, taking the already creepy concept of bikini armor to a new level. Chibi Peppers fucked around with this message at 17:36 on Feb 22, 2016 |

Record of Agarest War. Especially the special edition: It should be obvious what's bad about this, but it's completely baffling because the game is nothing like this at all. There's some questionable female character design, but every sexual image in the game was on the box. Everything else in the game was completely innocent and the "sexy" scenes are played as jokes in-game. It's certainly no "cornucopia of debauchery." I have no idea why they tried to sell it this way, at least in America. They even packed in a booby mousepad and a "sexy" pillowcase. It's a shame because the game is good but nobody wants to play it because they think it's porn. Funkmaster General fucked around with this message at 17:49 on Feb 22, 2016 |
