I've gotten a couple of free things over the years because of the sort of thing he's alluding to, but it's been like, a 24 pack of water the cashier forgot to scan, or the cat scratching post that customer service just gave to me because it wouldn't scan and it was very busy. A TV is uh, pushing it a little.

His post is silly though, he only explicitly said he got free stuff by being an rear end in a top hat, never by being nice. And both his 'companies' were definitely big chains despite his advice. He just wants to sound cool in front of his internet friends.

On the other side of the coin, FDA fuckery also means that a lot of things that may be legitimately beneficial go ignored for various reasons. The classic example is :420:, which despite being scientifically proven a billion times as having multiple significant lines of research re: medicinal properties, is still categorized as a Schedule I drug, meaning the government's official stance on it is "no medical uses at all and no allowances for medical study," which results in poo poo like Marinol and Sativex (used to treat motion sickness, seizures and many symptoms of degenerative neuronal diseases) being readily available in almost every country in the world except the US.

Another example is 5-HTP. It's a chemical precursor to serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that the most common antidepressants indirectly act on. You can get it on Amazon or at GNC or Walgreens or wherever, and in my personal experience it's a godsend. Several years of expensive, zombifying SSRIs, and 5-HTP treats my depression significantly better, without turning me into an emotional cripple. I know several people with similar experiences, but you better believe it's got that wonderful THESE STATEMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN EVALUATED BY THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION. THESE PRODUCTS ARE NOT INTENDED TO DIAGNOSE, TREAT, CURE OR PREVENT DISEASE. labels on the bottle.

I worked at a pharmacy that sold marinol in the mid to late 2000's in Texas. I think it's been a part of the pharmaceutical regimen in the US for years. The problem is that nobody wants to prescribe it, and it's really annoying because you tend to have to refrigerate it, if I'm remembering which pot-based-drug marinol is accurately.

That said, it is dumb af that pot is illegal.

Nah, the Christian angle is old as heck, I ran into it a bunch even ten years ago. Appealing to religion seems to be a good way to find suckers but the scammers always lay it on so thick.

That might have come out wrong, it's like "oh you're a part of my in-group" which tried to make them look more trustworthy, and a pastor! Doing a religious mission! And offering this opportunity to fellow Christians too! If you find that stuff significant (as many so) is easier to get taken for a ride.

Why would you not lay it on thick though? Like, if I wanna find the densest, least aware person I can, being a little obviously scammy weeds out people who won't go on to be marks.

If you find someone with no ability to tell if you are being genuine or not, then you can really take them for a ride.

Comcast cable box update.

I returned the remaining equipment I had but, stunningly, they had no record of me even attempting to cancel my TV and phone services and gave me a direct number to call to do it AGAIN, so the month delay for the last box I kept had nothing to do with anything. My bill WAS lower, because of the poo poo I had returned right away, but, as I suspected, they basically just left the service on because they could and I had no way to prove I had called so they billed me for it.

The dude at Xfinity store straight up told me that the delay in the equipment return had no bearing on anything and gave me the REAL number to call for cancellation so gently caress all you people that tried to hang this horseshit on me.

You had equipment out, that they could tell you were using.

It's a huge mystery why it didn't get canceled the first time!

Scams like this often make very weird, basic errors to set off the scam warning for people too savvy to fall for their idiocy. That looks like a pretty good example of that.

Or the scammer doesn't know enough about computers to know why 1024 is significant.

Was driving a couple days ago and some guys in a van signal for me to roll down my window. I do, and they immediately ask if I want to buy a TV for a discount. When I say no, they offer to sell me some porn DVD's. I say have a no thanks, have a nice day, roll my window up and drive off.

It was surreal. Who gets harassed into buying a tv? Who buys porn DVD's from strangers off the street? It was ridiculous.

Casinos are fun, but it's just paid entertainment. If you keep that in mind, casinos change from 'scam and rip off!' to 'drink with your friends for a few hours playing a game'. It's an expensive diversion, but the odds for every single game are easily looked up, same with the lotto. I used to go to the casino and have fun, you just pull out x amount of money and consider it the cost of the evening. If you walk out with part of it, or more, then bonus. Otherwise, that was your entertainment for the night.

No, but the existence of alcoholics doesn’t mean we should ban alcohol, in my opinion. Mentioning that some (most) people can gamble in moderation is just being used as a counter example to the posters who are trying to equate ‘you can try to maybe win money, but the odds aren’t good’ to Nigerian prince scams.

Gambling addiction is real and damaging, but there are many, many people who can go, have fun, and leave without any problems.

Though I will admit more money spent on addiction treatment programs is absolutely a net social good.

This isn't really a con or scam, but the most impressive theft I saw from a decade ago was an addict who had a taxi waiting for him outside. Grabbed almost an entire display of blu rays and booked it into the cab. Well, probably a little more than a decade ago, since it was blu rays.

This happened to me when I was working in the pharmacy at a grocery store. I was outside talking to a coworker and a guy pulled up in a truck, left it on with the door open, disappeared inside then came running out a minute later with a whole armful of DVD’s and steak, hopped in his truck and sped off.

The store manager was furious.
