Mailing lists often embed a clear, tiny image that when loaded inform the server that the email was opened, even if the links aren't clicked. Mail Chimp does this by default to count "read emails" unless you choose to send a plain-text message.

I'm struggling with SEO right now. 1 year ago my site popped up from "townname translator" and now it's buried under paid ads for keyword-generated sites of faceless national competitors.
Adding my business to Google Maps helped, but there are still a lot of people who use Bing or Yahoo instead.

Last month I signed up for a "easy homepage" service through my local Chamber of Commerce, it's fugly and inflexible but all I need on there is some photos and a link to my .com site. It was on page 1 of Google within 24 hours. It's a huge help.
I'm also going to distribute paper flyers through the Chamber of Commerce monthly newsletter. Maybe twice a year.

Maybe I'm just a huge idiot irl because I can get good work online but rarely get contacted by local companies.

I'm in England and my local taxi company has always been great. Except last time I needed them where I booked through their app, and they sent an unmarked third-party private car who refused to take my card and drove me to a cash machine so I could get him cash out. It was extremely scary as a woman travelling alone and I will not be using them any more.

Yeah, I knew someone with a lovely background who got into Landmark Education seminars for self-actualization. She cut off contact from anyone/anything negative (her whole social group) and we never saw her again. At the time, we understood it was some Scientology-adjacent pay-for-play nonsense.

Now she's on FB, still doing the same spooky nerd poo poo as before, so she got out of whatever that trash was.

My daughter got her first phone for Christmas and even though I'm the only person who knows her mobile email address (Japan issues @provider addresses) she is starting to get fishing messages.

- You won the money prize!
- New phone let's catch up!
- Your package is scheduled to be delivered!
- Link without context

Can I assume that the mobile company itself is selling its customer list to these pests?

Sorry to say that it's a customized email address, not txts to the (recycled) phone number.
Japan still has sales calls but not aggressive spam and scammers like the US. We only ever get sales calls to our landline, not our mobiles. Since the 90s mobile numbers and area codes have been distinct from land lines (mobile 11 digits, wired 10 digits).

Have you seen the new video on the system he created to frustrate scammers and waste their time? It’s beautiful. He makes the scammers think they’ve succeeded by giving them a supposed code for bitcoin. When they try to redeem it, they get a slow as hell progress bar that eventually errors out, and tells them to call a helpline. The wait time is like 80 minutes, and then it randomly dumps the caller into a plausible recording, mimicking a support tech unable to hear the call, or a transfer to a voicemail. Then it asks for the caller to take a survey on how their experience was.

My org also does phishing tests, but they aren't too difficult to detect. There was a period of a few months where some of them were pretty goofy, and I think the person writing them got told to tone it down.

Here is my favourite, about a poor astronaut trapped on the ISS. Will you help get him down?

Dear Mr. Sir,
I am Dr. Bakare Tunde, the cousin of Nigerian Astronaut, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde. In the 14-years since
he has been on the station, he has accumulated flight pay and interest amounting to almost $ 15,000,000 USD.
If we can obtain access to this money, we can place a down payment with the Russian Space Authorities for a
Soyuz return flight to bring him back to Earth. I am told this will cost $ 3,000,000 American Dollars. In order to
access the his trust fund we need your assistance.
My colleague and I are willing to transfer you the 3,000,000 USD in order to help bring him home.
Kindly expedite action as we are behind schedule to enable us include downpayment in this financial quarter.
Please click on this link to enter your banking information.
Yours Sincerely, Dr. Bakare Tunde
Astronautics Project Manager

My email is a.lastname@gmail.com. I try my best to contact the sender and implore them to contact the intended recipient a different way, and to add an email verification step to their sign up processing.

One guy I managed to make contact with, his colleagues kept forgetting the numbers in his email address. We chatted a bit and it turns out we're distant relatives - literally descended twin brothers who went separate ways in the 1850s wild west. Life can be cool if you're nice, sometimes.

Sometimes I have taken the name and address from the invoices and sent them a postcard informing them that their car warranty/online classes/dentist appointment notifications are going to the wrong address.

Actually for the online classes I took pleasure in emailing the teacher and telling them their student is an idiot.
