Oh poo poo, you meant the kids book. I did not expect that to be available online.

He's not CLEARING $25,000 a year is the thing. And, yeah, their whole deal is to get it to where you get to be up on the STAGE and pretending to be successful. It's loving disgusting what they do and I can't believe people fall for it.

Then again, it's 2017 and people should know better but televangalists and faith healers sell magic spring water that cures cancer and armageddon pancake mix. At a certain point I find myself getting mad at the people buying it.

Yeah, soon after that post I read that he was making $30 000 as an Emerald before taxes. Jesus Christ.

I'm at the part where he's quitting and expecting it to go badly.

I think my favorite insane moment was when Kerry loses his mind because Eric is "doing better" than him and starts the Amway Goon squad, complete with quick-drawing his gun from his fanny pack and pointing it at a fabric partition that has people on the other side of it :psyduck:

I'm almost done the book. I'm at the part where he's been out for almost 6 months and is talking to other people who left.

Aside from the horrific amount of harassment and weird poo poo like withholding the income he would have received from Amway, putting it in an account that he cannot access, then sending him letters that they're charging him 10% now 15% for tapes that his members want to return and it's his fault somehow BUT DO NOT CONTACT US BACK OR WE'LL CALL THE POLICE.

I think the strangest part is how he found out that Zack had a secret recording studio that he used to copy the tapes and cut Dexter out of the profits. It would be pathetic if it wasn't so evil.

Why are Zack and Amway so gung-ho about their victims getting their wives to stay at home and eventually quitting their jobs? It seems like having at least one person working a real job would be good to keep the money coming in. Same with when Kerry and Chris drove away all the new recruits with their aggressive insanity and Zack refused to replace them, even though John and Kathy were bringing in all the people/money- they prize unquestioning loyalty over making more money?

Just finished the book. I feel that he made great strides in tracking down people who Zack had employed but not treated very well and who could dish dirt on him... but that last metaphor was a bit of a doozy :stare:

Car sales people get so angry when you try to "shop" them, aka trying to get a good deal and do some research and compare offers.

Like, yelling at you angry.

Professor Shark

Amway people have to buy anything they can from Amway, it's how they bleed their victims and cover themselves legally (by having a product). They sell stickers that your "friends" can put on your non Amway products when they visit.

Just make sure you say "$10k net profit." Some of these MLMs can convince people they're making money by using terms like "sales volume of over $10 thousand!" or "generating downline revenue of thousands of dollars!" or some other vague bullshit. Sure, it won't make much of a difference anyway, but some MLMs actually do give checks out to people as a percentage of how much the distributor purchased and how many people in the distributor's downline purchased. For instance, you and your downline might have bought $2000 worth of merchandise that month, and you get maybe 1% of that- $20 check. Of course, you're still spending hundreds of dollars a month on merchandise just to get that $20 check, and so is everyone below you. My friend I mentioned earlier with Amway/Team showed me a check from the company for $6 and some change. I can't imagine how much he was spending to get that check, not to mention all the seminars and training materials he was buying as well.

Later, he told me he found out it was against the rules of Amway to show prospective distributors paychecks. The official rule stated something about protecting the company from fraud, but it was so obvious the real reason was the company knew drat well about 99% of its' distributors were making less than $10 per month.

One of the big things the author of Merchants of Deception stressed was that talking to others ("Cross Streaming" or something?) was 100% against the rules because it contaminated the streams... the way one upstream ran their downstream might be different than how another does it, so it just creates confusion and resentment.

Another way of seeing that would be that they wanted the different sects of their cult to remain clueless and not be able to compare notes. Over the years the author began to realize that some upstreams gave breaks for some things that others didn't, 15% off coupons basically, and it was A Big Deal.

How is the author of MoD doing these days? I tried to look his name up, but all I found was an obituary for someone with his name from 2012...

Netflix has a series called "Dirty Money" and the second episode is about Scott Tucker, a guy who created a Payday Loan company that was even scummier and blatantly illegal than most.

He's super salty that it's possible that he'll be going to jail and goes on and on about how it's unfair that a self made man who never had anyone to rely on is being punished by the big bad government and comes across as a genuine sociopath. His business worked by pretending to be a Native American business which didn't need to follow the laws other Payday Loan places had to... he was sentenced to 16 years a few weeks ago lol

Professor Shark
May 22, 2012

Could be!

I finished the episode, the anger at the goverment from the guy and his lawyer (who also ended up going to jail) is pathetic and their claims that the goverment are the REAL criminals is hilarious. They never show any self reflection on how their choices led to their situations, just anger that they weren’t allowed to get away with their crimes.

Tucker’s brother killed himself instead of standing trial and going to jail, he and an employee blame the government for his death, of course.

That's a capital "i", not a lowercase "L"

Professor Shark
May 22, 2012

I was shocked this morning when I had an email from Apple with a receipt for my recent purchases that listed them in the email itself, rather than an email from AppIe (uppercase "i") with a list of my recent purchaseds asking me to download a PDF

Professor Shark
May 22, 2012

I should have clarified- I actually did make purchases from Apple, and it was an email confirming it. Usually my contact is with AppIe and it's scams

Professor Shark
May 22, 2012

I'm pretty sure that when I check my email on my phone it doesn't show the complete email address, only the first few characters, so if you're in a hurry or just not paying attention you might just assume it's legit. Also, it works because a lot of people use Apple Store or whatever. I got one that said my account was locked and I need to click this link to unlock it, it was a scam. Apple says the easiest way to tell is if the email from "Apple" uses your name and knows specifically what you've purchased recently.

It sounds like it's basically the Self Checkout of phone scams. If you have one lady with a slight French accent attending to 10 different semi automatic calls intervening when the computer gets confused then you will increase your illegal cash flow.

We just had a kid and my wife got a call from a financial group she agreed to give her info to when signing up for free offers or whatever.

The call is from a legit organization that appears to promise you the world when setting up an education plan but has horrendous reviews online ranging from “outrageous fees eat up any gains” to “they promised all fees would be returned as a lump sum at the end but they never deliver”.

The calls seem to be laser targeted for sleep new deprived parents/ lonely new moms and my wife was freaked out by how happy she was to talk to another woman who showed interest on the phone.

We cancelled the information session that had been set up.

yeah somebody pulled this one on my dentist a couple years ago, once they start driving to the sheriffs office and freaking out proper the caller offers to take a bribe, sends the victim to walmart and they successfully took her for $5k of apple gift cards over the phone.

Probably the same group even, they seem to like spearfishing doctors because they have a magical intersection of overconfidence, quick access to funds, and too embarrassed to report promptly

This is what I figured would happen. There isn’t a lot of originality in these scams and keeping the victim on the line is common for the Walmart ones.
