Idiot: "I'm gonna download my consciousness and live as an immortal machine." lol @ "immortal" machines. Off the top of my head I can't think of any complex machine with a functional lifespan greater than that of the average human. Appliances: 5-10 years depending on the appliance. Cars: 5-10 years avg. 20-30 with a really good owner. 50+ with meticulous care and preservation. Aircraft: same as cars Computers: lol like 3 years. Navy Warships: 50 years Assembly Line Robots: 20-30 years I can't think of a machine operating today that I probably won't outlive. When you think of all the cars, toasters, computers, blenders and lawnmowers you burn through in your lifetime, the sci-fi cliche of robots outliving humans seems laughable.

Op I don't think the idea is to put your mind in one machine forever. Instead, you put it in something like the Internet, which currently relies on many machines all over the world.

the idea is you can trivially copy your consciousness around from older machines to newer machines since its just files try it before you knock it

Ahundredbux posted:you'll be uploading a copy so you'll still die making it all pointless from your perspective This has also always bugged me about the whole "uploading" solution. Frankly I think we're better off focusing our efforts on some kind of immortality potion. Actually my favorite "immortality" solution is the "Multiples" from Peter F. Hamilton's Void trilogy. Basically the gist is that your consciousness gets synchronized across several bodies who all actively share your memories, personality and experience. You can't "die" until they're all destroyed and you can keep adding new bodies to replace ones that age and die. It gets around what I feel to be the major problem with consciousness uploading and plus you can have orgies with yourself. Best option, IMO.

They are just dupes of the lower forces who are trying to get the human plants to make immortal bodies before the planet is recycled. And the correct terminology you want is 'upload' OP - downloading a consciousness means being possessed.

Yeah op is totally right there is literally no evidence of any form of data lasting more than a human lifetime. Literally all information in existence today is only a few decades old, soon to disappear forever when the devices that hold it rust away.

DONT CARE BUTTON posted:Yeah op is totally right there is literally no evidence of any form of data lasting more than a human lifetime. Literally all information in existence today is only a few decades old, soon to disappear forever when the devices that hold it rust away. I'm talking more about the machine body. Obviously you could keep downloading your consciousness into new bodies but you only have 10-20 years to do it, as opposed to like a hundred or a thousand like people seem to think. I guess if you're already super rich that's not a problem but if you're working class you are gonna be spending all your spare time working to buy your next body and you'll have no time to enjoy your immortality.

Ahundredbux posted:you'll be uploading a copy so you'll still die making it all pointless from your perspective Lol I always thought this was the most disheartening thing about the whole concept. You can't get around this. The worst thing I think is if you could repeatedly "jack yourself in" the internet and copy your concious to and back what if you were just killing yourself constantly but you would never know because your copy only knows what I knows and it appears seamless to it ?
