Whoa: Rada speaker Volodymyr Hroysman has withdrawn his candidacy for PM, as some of his conditions haven't been met. As Yataenyuk's resignation is supposed to be submitted tomorrow, things have gotten pretty strange.

The news from Poland made me inspired to share some from Russia: today someone unveiled a 3m-tall statue of Zhirinovskiy, with "God save the Tzar" as the music for the ceremony.

So it looks like there will be a Hroysman government in Ukraine after all -- the coalition voted for it in its own meeting (though the Rada vote is still outstanding). Making it work seems to have required an absurd number of Vice Prime Ministers. Highlights of negotiations mostly involved Ukrainian and Western press demonstrating poor quality of their work (OMG, they are horse-trading over ministerial portofolios, how barbaric --- did they think Steinmeier became German FM because he was the best person in the country for the job?), including complete inability to adjust poorly sourced preconceptions based on actual evidence (what do you mean Hroysman has his own opinions? We KNOW he is Poroshenko's puppet, so clearly this is just super-disfuction unique to Ukraine, and not a politician being less than 100%-aligned with their mentor, which happens everywhere else). Also present was traditional over willingness to take anything journalist/MP Leschenko says as true uncritically, not at all tempered by his inability to do his actual MP job. Totally-unrelated-to-the-press-conference: the worker who asked a year ago about him and his colleagues not getting paid for building the Vostochniy Kosmodrome has been arrested for 5 days. (And he still hasn't gotten his salary). There also have been a bunch of FSB raids aimed at pressuring the owner of the RBC news agency to someone who would be less prone to let them do some occasional journalism.

In the other direction, a couple of Russian opposition activists had their Telegram accounts hacked. The process apparenty "coincided" with their phone company (MTS) disabling their service for a period overnight, then someone doing some sort of recovery process and mysteriously getting the code SMS that should have been sent to the temporairly disabled phone number. Wonder how that happened....

Let's not dehumanize too much, plus the victims of the fire were mostly just heavily anti-Semitic Soviet nostalgia fanatics which were herded in to act as human shields for those who were running around with guns --- who got out from both the building and the country just peachy, along with some of the cop bigwigs who were backing them. Also sadly the fire truck hijack likely contributed heavily to he outcome, since the nepotism appointee running the emergency services (accomplishment: daddy was a mayor, IIRC) wasn't going to risk another truck just to put out some fire!
