There are so many out there I don't know what to search for. Maybe I'll go back to Newgrounds. It was made crappy on purpose but I loved it. What was that point-and-click game about an Australian guy from a town called "Pullyapantsup" and I think there were aliens.

Ah Undergrads. A friend of mine was an animator on it, and they based the look of the dude that was always smoking and swearing on his apperance. Actually, all of those guys were based on people who worked on the show. I remember hearing about this over and over, to the point of nausea. Everybody in high school wanted one of these. I had one, until the battery committed suicide. And who could forget everyone's favourite operating system? EDIT: Now I've got my nostalgia on, this. I used to have a acquaintance in high school who used to go on and on about Kevin Rudd (former Australian Prime Minister). Using such sound political logic as "Kevin Rudd has hair, whilst John Howard (Prime Minister at the time) is bald, so therefore, he would make a better PM". He was also in extreme opposition to American/Australian involvement in the Vietnam War, which he genuinely seemed to think was still going on, in 2006. The Crimson Room flash game I think pretty much started the whole "escape from a locked room" genre of games. Check it out: http://lparchive.org/999-Nine-Hours-Nine-Persons-Nine-Doors/Update%2025/ Also, the Mystery of Time and Space adventure game was a puzzle game along the same lines and pretty neat. I remember signing a guest book at the end and that the creator was continuously adding to the game. I'm not sure if it ever finished. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTY9HBpOAKo LP with sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRFA_eHcs5M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAEtP9BnkDk It started in 2001 apparently. I also remember another point and click adventure game that involved a penguin and climbing up a waterfall through a pipe system where water rushed through every so often. I can't think of the name, though. MIDI files in general are pretty early-2000s nostalgia. Teriyaki Koinku has a new favorite as of 19:22 on Mar 5, 2016 |

I associate MIDI files with the 90s when a computer that could show more than just text was so special it had to be dignified as a Multimedia Computer. Video, sound, images, AND text? Woah! Did we mention lolcats yet? This was the height of memery in the Aughts. It's kind of interesting that the snek memes feel like kind of a throwback to lolcats to me, especially in the peculiar language used. It even ended up becoming an esoteric programming language: code:

I think the late aughts/early 2010s is when memes as a concept went from in-jokes at 4chans (think Milhouse, etc) to mainstream use and being put on TV commercials.

I think you're generally right, but don't overlook things like the Dancing Baby (ended up on Ally McBeal), Hampster Dance, and We Like The Moon (ended up in a Quiznos commercial). They existed, they just had different names, and were not all wrapped up under the idea of "meme". Advertising and culture have been running catchphrases into the ground forever. For example, SA usually called them macros, because they were tied to bbcode macros that would produce an image with text on it. Their use fell out of favor because goons ran them into the ground like they always do. I don't know why they used the Impact typeface but it was first done on SA, and that's stuck with them to today.
